Sunrisers Hyderabad have secured the services of Wanindu Hasaranga for the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The Hyderabad-based team has entered the Sri Lankan spinner in the ongoing 2024 IPL auction.
The 2017 IPL champions managed to sign the player at their base price of Rs 1.5 crore. Sunrisers Hyderabad were looking to acquire a quality spinner after releasing English spinner Adil Rashid and Akeal Hosein from the West Indies last month. In Wanindu Hasaranga, they now have a quality player. Before signing the Sri Lankan, Sunrisers Hyderabad had also signed the Australian Travis Head.
Wanindu Hasaranga was a surprise release from Royal Challengers Bangalore. The world’s T20I bowler is widely regarded as one of the best T20I bowlers in the world. He is also a skilled lower order batsman. So far, the 26-year-old has played 58 T20Is and has taken an impressive 91 wickets, besides scoring over 500 runs. In total, he has more than 200 wickets in just 157 T20s.
He started his IPL career in 2021 with Royal Challengers Bangalore and played only two games. He proved his worth in 2022 by taking an impressive 26 wickets in 16 games, including a 5-wicket haul. However, Wanindu Hasaranga failed to live up to expectations in 2023 and managed a modest 9 wickets in 8 games. So far, he has taken 35 wickets in 26 IPL games.
