Waqar Younis to become Pakistan’s Rob Key as PCB set to appoint him Director of Cricket

Former Pakistani pace bowler Waqar Younis is reportedly set to be offered a very important position by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). The Pakistani great is tipped to become the new PCB Director of Cricket (CCO).

He was initially appointed as an advisor to the PCB chairman. And according to a PTI report, the appointment is a precursor to a more permanent and influential position. While recent reports indicated that the role was merely advisory, PTI reported that Waqar Younis’ new role is a paid one and he will play a significant role for Pakistan cricket in the coming days.

The PCB wants the former Pakistan captain to take on the roles that Rob Key performs at the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). Key is the chief executive of the England men’s team and is responsible for most of the major decisions of the English team and Waqar Younis is likely to have a similar role.

The new role could involve the former cricketer in team selection, framing central contractual policies and formulating other policies for the betterment of Pakistan cricket across all formats and levels. Waqar Younis has experience as a player, captain and coach and could prove to be a good appointment for PCB.

Pakistan team’s poor performance:

The PCB is desperate for a turnaround in the fortunes of the Pakistan cricket team. The Men in Green have been facing heavy criticism from fans after their woeful displays in recent times. In the last one year, Pakistan suffered disastrous campaigns in two World Cups.

Last year, they failed to advance to the league stage at the ODI World Cup. Last month, the Babar Azam-led side was knocked out of the T20 World Cup at the group stage after suffering defeats against the United States and India.

In between these two World Cup campaigns, they lost the Test series in Australia and the T20I series in New Zealand before drawing the T20I series at home against a second-string New Zealand side. They also lost a T20I against Ireland before losing the T20I series against England in May. Pakistan will be in action next when they host Bangladesh for a Test series.
