Wasim Khan suddenly quits Jay Shah’s ICC team

The Jay Shah-led International Cricket Council is set to undergo a major shake-up in its management structure as Wasim Khan is reportedly set to step down as ICC director general of cricket after four years in the role. Khan took over in 2022 following the departure of Geoff Allardice in May of that year.

As Wasim Khan is set to take on a new role, the International Cricket Council will have to announce a new name for this position. Before joining the Board as CEO, he was a crucial part of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) as CEO for almost three years.

Wasim Khan has done multiple high profile projects for ICC

Khan, a former cricketer, has had an illustrious career in administrative duties in various roles in the past. Currently the director general of cricket at the International Cricket Council and previously chief executive of PCB, he also served as chief executive at Leicestershire county.

As an ICC official, he had to face a number of challenges as cricket has witnessed rapid changes in recent years. With more matches taking place in T20 and T10 formats around the world, the job as ICC general manager of cricket became more challenging than before. Despite the challenges, she has done very well in the Future Tours Program (2023-27) and also in the first women’s FTP.

“One of the major challenges during Wasim’s tenure at the ICC was an increasingly packed cricket schedule with more T20 and T10 leagues taking up space for international cricket. But in the last Future Tours Program (2023-27), which was finalized during his time, there was actually an increase in the amount of international cricket. The first women’s FTP was also unveiled in this period,” ESPNCricinfo reported in a report.

Khan had an impressive domestic career as a batsman.

Meanwhile, Wasim Khan was the first British-born Muslim to play county cricket. He played for Warwickshire in the mid to late 90s. The former left-handed batsman played 58 First Division matches and 30 List A matches. He played those List A matches for Warwickshire, Sussex and Derbyshire. His most memorable spell as a batsman was with Warwickshire when they won the title in 1995.

Many other officials also left the Council in the recent past.

The report further suggested that Wasim Khan’s tenure at the ICC as director general of cricket will end at the end of June and he is likely to take up a new role in July. In recent years, several senior ICC officials have left the Council, including Allardice, Chris Tetley (head of events) and Alex Marshall (head of the Anti-Corruption Unit).

“Wasim Khan will finish at the end of June and take up another role from July. His imminent departure follows the departure of several senior ICC officials over the past two years, including Allardice, replaced by Sanjog Gupta as chief executive, Chris Tetley (head of events) and Alex Marshall, who headed the anti-corruption unit. Tetley has been replaced by Gaurav Saxena and Marshall by Andrew Ephgrave,” the report added.
