Gujarat Titans (GT) batsman David Miller oozed his class on the field in the match against Mumbai Indians (MI) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. The match between the two heavyweights took place at the Narendra Modi International Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Chasing the target of 169 runs, Mumbai Indians had the game under control most of the time. Rohit Sharma (43) and Dewald Brevis (46) kept the team in the hunt and during the time they were batting, it looked like the Hardik Pandya-led team would win the game.
Even after Rohit and Brevis got out, Mumbai looked favorites with the kind of batsmen they had in the mix. Many had bet on Tim David and with the reputation he brings, it looked like he would take his team home as there weren’t many runs in the bank.
However, Tim David failed to set the stage and fire as Mumbai came under pressure. But it’s fair to say that if David Miller hadn’t been there, things would have been different. The GT player produced a magnificent effort on the field that brought the dangerous David back into the game.
During the last ball of the 18th over, Mohit Sharma bowled a slower ball outside off. Tim David took it off the bottom half of the bat and launched it towards the night sky around the mid-wicket region. It looked like the ball would land safely and the batter would have life.
But it wasn’t meant to be as David Miller, from deep mid-wicket, almost ran a marathon and made a sensationally well-timed dive to take the catch inches from the turf. And he sends the dangerous Tim David back to the hut for just 11 runs.
David Miller’s tremendous effort in the field tilted the game for the Gujarat Titans who won the game from the jaws of defeat. With 19 runs needed in the last over, Hardik Pandya hit 10 runs off the first two balls. But Umesh Yadav made a solid comeback and defended the target to win the game by 4 runs.
It was exceptional: Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill after win over GT
Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill spoke about the victory his team registered in the match against Mumbai Indians. He praised the players’ effort as outstanding and praised Sai Sudharsan for his brave effort with the bat. In statements to the stations, he explained:
“The way the children held their nerves when the spray came in was exceptional. The way our spinners played ensured that we were always in the game. It’s about controlling your nerves. He (Sai Sudharsan) has been a revelation for us. We just wanted to increase the pressure and wait for them to make mistakes.
“The crowd is one thing, they have always come out, whether it is a day game or a night game, and say hello to all the fans who have come here to support us. I thought it was a good score but we definitely left at least 15 runs there, it was difficult to hit those short balls as the wicket got a little slow towards the end.”
The Gujarat Titans will next be seen in action when they take on Chennai Super Kings on March 26 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
