Melbourne Stars captain Glenn Maxwell won the Man of the Match award in his team’s victory over the Renegades in the Melbourne derby on Tuesday 2 January. He scored an unbeaten 32 off 15 balls and took one wicket giving away only 8 runs in the match.
The victory has taken Sar to third position in the points table, winning four and losing three games of the seven played. The Renegades, on the other hand, are in eighth position in the points table.
The match was reduced to 14 overs per side due to rain. Melbourne Stars won this toss and elected to bowl first. They restricted the Renegades to 97 under par in 14 overs. The Renegades lost wickets at regular intervals and the Stars bowlers attacked at regular intervals.
In the Stars’ chase, Thomas Rogers scored an unbeaten 46 off 34 balls to take his team home along with Maxwell, who was at his belligerent best. With the Stars receiving 28 off 22 balls, Maxwell took matters into his own hands and hit Azam Zampa, his Australian teammate, for three consecutive sixes.

The first of those six was hit just above the player’s head. Maxwell, with his unusual stance, used his bottom hand to good effect to send it over the boundary. The second six was hit long on when Maxwell had his eyes closed at the point of contact with the bat. Despite this, the ball went well over the limit. The third six was again over the long boundary which went well over the fielder’s head for the third consecutive six from the end.

Maxwell had a shy smile on his face while Zampa had a look of contempt. The Stars won the match in 12.1 overs to register a comfortable victory and move third in the points table. They will then play the Sydney Sixers on January 6 and play the Renegades again in the round-robin clash on January 13.
By contrast, the Stars have lost five games in this year’s BBL. Their only victory was against the Adelaide Strikers on 29 December. Melbourne Renegades captain Aaron Finch is set to retire from the BBL after this season. He hasn’t played too many games this season but has been a spectator in most of the games. The Stars won but have not yet won the tournament.
The Perth Scorchers have won the title five times. Sydney Sixers three times and Melbourne Renegades, Adelaide Strikers and Brisbane Heat once each. Previously, Glenn Maxwell was signed by Royal Challengers Bangalore ahead of IPL 2024 and Zampa was also signed by Rajasthan Royals.
“The IPL will probably be the last tournament I play as I will play the IPL until I can’t walk anymore. I was talking about how good the IPL has been for me throughout my career; “The people I’ve met, the coaches I’ve played with, the international players I get to rub shoulders with, how beneficial that tournament has been for my entire career,” Maxwell said.
