Pakistan captain Shan Masood is usually a calm captain but Pakistan’s stance in the first Test match made him lose his temper. The incident took place during the first Test match of the series between Pakistan and Bangladesh in Rawalpindi.

In a video that has been widely circulated on social media, Shan Masood is seen having an animated discussion with the team’s head coach Jason Gillespie and Pakistan’s coaching staff. Masood was clearly not happy with something that was happening on the field.

As the coaching staff tried to calm him down, Gillespie did not utter a word and listened to the captain. Both Shan Masood and Jason Gillespie came into the dressing room to discuss the matter. The ongoing Test series against Bangladesh is Gillespie’s first assignment as Pakistan’s head coach in Test cricket.

Pakistan bounce back after losing a few wickets early

The match did not go as Pakistan would have wished. After being put in to bat, they lost their three best wickets for just 16 runs. However, Saim Ayub and vice-captain Saud Shakeel steadied the ship with brilliant knocks.

Ayub was dismissed for 56, but the situation was about to get worse for Bangladesh. Mohammad Rizwan came to the crease and got the Bangladesh bowlers out. Shakeel and Rizwan tormented the Bangladesh bowlers on a pitch that had settled after the initial moisture.

Shakeel was dismissed by pace bowler Mehidy Hasan Miraz for 141 but Rizwan stayed at the other end and kept piling on runs. He remained unbeaten on 171 when Pakistan captain Shan Masood decided to declare the innings at 448-6.

Bangladesh responded with a strong counter-offensive

In response, Bangladesh were more cautious in their strategy. However, they lost two wickets quickly as Zakir Hasan and captain Najmul Hossain Shanto were dismissed in quick succession. However, Shadman Islam and Mominul Haque steadied the ship with a useful partnership.

Mominul was dismissed for a well-made fifty while Shadman was unlucky not to get to a well-deserved century. At 218-5, it looked like Pakistan would quickly get the tail-end but Mushfiqur Rahim and Litton Das had other ideas.

Das quickly scored 56 off 78 balls to give the innings the much-needed boost. At the other end, Rahim kept batting and hit a well-deserved century. He formed a marathon partnership with Mehidy Hasan Miraz that broke Pakistan’s back and took Bangladesh into the lead.

Rahim failed to achieve a well-deserved double century and was dismissed for 191. But despite failing to achieve the milestone, he had taken Bangladesh to a position where they can now dream of a win. Meanwhile, Miraz batted well for a well-deserved half-century and was dismissed for 77.
