Watch: Steve Smith cleared to duck after dropping ball as poor form continues

During the Sheffield Shield match against Victoria at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, the out-of-form Smith was dismissed for a duck in the second innings.

The former Australia captain, who batted at number three, did not offer a chance to a Scott Boland delivery and was given leg before the wicket. He managed only three runs in the first innings and was dismissed for a duck in the second.

Smith’s expression indicated that he misread the ball and was surprised by how much the ball swung.

Smith is currently going through a rough patch of form. In his last six first-class innings, he was dismissed twice for a duck and managed to reach double figures only twice, with no fifty to his name.

Steve Smith has opened the batting in a couple of games since David Warner’s retirement, but has previously mentioned that his favorite batting position is number four. Smith will then bat at number four for Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

“They asked me where I would prefer to bat, and I said four… I also said I’m happy batting anywhere, I’m not too worried actually,” the star batsman told reporters on Monday at Stumps on the second day of NSW. Sheffield Shield match against Victoria.

β€œCummins and McDonald asked me what my preference would be and I said four. I saw some things last week that said I asked to bat at four. That was not the case. I said I’m happy to bat wherever you want me to bat, but yes, four would be my ideal position. It was a lot of fun to try something new, hit up high. I still feel like I can do a job there safely. β€œIt was a pretty small sample,” Smith added.

Throughout his Test career, he has batted predominantly at number 4, scoring 5,966 runs at an average of 61.50, including 19 centuries and 26 fifties.
