Just like over the years, the rivalry between Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians has generated another viral moment in their IPL 2026 clash on May 2.
Tilak Varma and Jamie Overton were also involved this time, but no angry words were exchanged. Varma had to bear the full brunt of Overton’s pace during the match in Chennai.
Mumbai Indians suffer another loss
MI’s struggles in IPL 2026 seem to have no end. Already ninth in the points table as time runs out for playoff qualification, MI suffered another defeat as CSK completed the season twice over them.
Hardik Pandya won the toss and elected to bat first, but things did not go as planned. Anshul Kamboj dismissed Will Jacks in the second over himself. Ryan Rickelton and Naman Dhir contributed 58, but no one else formed a significant partnership.
Dhir top-scored with 57, but MI’s famous middle-order of Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya and Tilak Varma failed against the likes of Noor Ahmad and Jamie Overton.
Pandya, especially, could not get going, making just 18 runs off 23 deliveries. Mumbai could manage only 159/7 in the end.
CSK never seemed to have any real problems during the chase. Although Sanju Samson departed early, Urvil Patel’s aggressive cameo set the stage for Ruturaj Gaikwad and Kartik Sharma to score fifties to give CSK a much-needed win.
Overton breaks Tilak Varma’s fitness band
The incident occurred on the last ball of the 12th over of MI’s innings.
Tilak Varma tried to take a quicker delivery from Jamie Overton over the leg side but missed and was hit on the wrist. With the force of the ball hitting the band, it came apart.
Varma also seemed to need some attention to his wrist and was clearly in pain.
The video of the incident has gone viral on the Internet.

Tilak Varma’s poor form in IPL 2026
Like Mumbai Indians, Tilak Varma too has been struggling for form and consistency.
Against the Gujarat Titans, he joined a rare club of batsmen who scored an IPL hundred while batting at number 5 or below. However, it has been a struggle ever since. In another 8 innings, he crossed 20 only once.
Despite a highest score of 101*, Tilak Varma has made only 193 runs in 9 matches at an average of 24.12 but a relatively healthy strike rate of 162.
Bad season for Mumbai Indians and next match
The loss against Chennai Super Kings left MI with just 2 wins in 9 matches. The five-time champions are currently on a three-game losing streak and are all but eliminated from playoff contention.

MI’s next match is against an equally problematic Lucknow Super Giants team. These two teams are currently in ninth and tenth place in the points table respectively. Whoever loses will surely be eliminated from playoff contention.
