Virender Sehwag and MS Dhoni

Former India opening batsman and winner of the 2011 Cricket World Cup Virender Sehwag He took a friendly jab at his former captain and Chennai Super Kings legend MS Dhoni. Sehwag called Dhoni “Buzurg”, which translates to old man or elder during a discussion with Rohan Gavaskar on the importance of catches. This is not the first time Viru has made such comments as he has already investigated his former IPL franchise Punjab Kings for fun.

Virender Sehwag is currently doing Hindi and Haryanvi commentary on IPL 2024 with Jio Cinema. He has won hearts with the witty comments of him, the light jabs of him and by using his local Haryana accent. And during a recent discussion with Cricbuzz, while chatting about how catches win matches, Sehwag made old comments about MS Dhoni.

Viru said that in the context of MS Dhoni completing a diving catch during Chennai Super Kings’ 63-run win against Gujarat Titans at the MA Chidambaram Stadium 2 days ago. Dhoni had caught all-rounder Vijay Shankar off an outside delivery from CSK’s New Zealand all-rounder Daryl Mitchell. That particular catch had become a topic of discussion among fans and cricket experts as to how Thala was able to pull off such dives at the age of 42.

Describing the importance of catches in cricket, Sehwag said: “Yes, catches win games. Here Rahane caught one, (Rachin) Ravindra took a few and even an elderly MS Dhoni took.” Rohan Gavaskar, who was sitting next to him at the time, had a blank facial reaction and seemed quite taken aback by how Viru said this.

Sehwag’s comments have received mixed reactions from MS Dhoni and CSK fans, with some trolling and criticizing the former Delhi captain who had a falling out with Dhoni during his playing days. There was one fan who didn’t like those comments and responded saying: “Old MS Dhoni can still play better than you in your entire career 🤡.”

Another fan wrote that Sehwag is simply jealous of MSD because the former couldn’t lead India to a World Cup trophy as captain. There were a few more fans who felt that Virender Sehwag was not wrong in calling MS Dhoni an old man. “What’s happening here? You were hyping that catch just because Dhoni is over 40 years old 😂😂.”

The best comment was the one in which a user wrote, “You used to say well that a 42-year-old man had caught, he had said the same thing, so what’s wrong with that? Is it valid when you say that in English but saying the same thing in Hindi becomes rape?
