Fans on Twitter reacted after defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) defeated Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the opening game of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. The inaugural tournament took place at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Friday (March 22).
RCB won the toss and opted to bat first. They got off to a good start as captain Faf du Plessis (35) and Virat Kohli (21) added 41 runs for the opening partnership. But the opening wicket brought about collapse for them as they lost wickets in bunches.
RCB reeled at 78/5 and that was when Anuj Rawat (48) and Dinesh Karthik (38) came together and got the team out of trouble. They added 95 runs and propelled their team to a total of 173 runs. For CSK, Mustafizur Rahman was the pick of the players with his figures of 4/29.
During the chase, CSK made a valiant start with the bat. Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad (15) and Rachin Ravindra (37) played good shots early on and put pressure on RCB from the start. They totaled 38 runs together.
After that, Ajinkya Rahane (27) and Daryl Mitchell (22) took charge and oozed class with the bat. The duo batted aggressively but both lost their wickets at crucial moments. RCB made a slight comeback in the match by reducing CSK to 110/4.
But it was Shivam Dube (34*) and Ravindra Jadeja (25*) who defended the team and ensured that CSK chased down the target comfortably. At first the pacemakers put them to the test, but they got through the difficult phase well. They added an unbeaten 65 runs and made a mockery of RCB’s bowling lineup. Chennai Super Kings chased down the target with 6 wickets in hand and started the tournament on a high.
