Fans on Twitter reacted after former captain Gautam Gambhir was announced as the head coach of the Indian National Cricket Team. The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) mentor was announced as Rahul Dravid’s replacement on Tuesday (July 9).
Rahul Dravid’s tenure as the head coach of the Indian team ended after the 2024 T20 World Cup. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been on the lookout for a head coach ever since the conclusion of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. Since then, there has been only one name in talks and that was Gautam Gambhir.
Reports claimed that BCCI was impressed with the way Gautam Gambhir mentored Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL 2024 and hence, they were keen to rope him in. He, along with the BCCI, were on the same page regarding what they need to do for the nation as India back then did not have an ICC trophy since 2013.
It was just a matter of time before BCCI announced him as the head coach of the team. Secretary Jay Shah made the announcement through a social media post and stated that the KKR mentor understands the game well and there is no better person than him to take the team forward. He stated:
“It is an immense pleasure to welcome Mr. Gautam Gambhir as the new Head Coach of the Indian Cricket Team. Modern cricket has evolved rapidly and Gautam has witnessed this changing landscape closely. Having endured the strain and excelled in various roles throughout his career, I am confident that Gautam is the ideal person to lead Indian cricket forward.”
Gautam, who won the 2007 ICC T20 World Cup and the 2011 ICC World Cup, will join the team with very little coaching experience. He has only mentored Lucknow Super Giants and Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL and has had incredible success with them.
Gautam Gambhir will take charge of the Indian team in the upcoming away series against Sri Lanka. India will play 3 ODIs and 3 T20Is on their tour of Sri Lanka and the former captain of the team would be keen to make an immediate impact on the team.
Gautam Gambhir is likely to be the head coach of Team India for the 2027 World Cup. He will have some big tasks on his head as India will be touring Australia for Tests and after that, there will be the ICC Champions Trophy and the ICC World Test Championship final.
