Why is Rohit Sharma not playing today’s match against Gujarat Titans in IPL 2026?

There is no Rohit Sharma for Mumbai Indians (MI) for tonight’s match against Gujarat Titans (GT). Before the match, the star batsman was seen in net sessions with the bat, but at the toss it was confirmed that the former MI captain was not part of the crucial match at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Rohit Sharma suffered a hamstring injury while batting against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. Due to the injury, he also missed Mumnai’s previous match which was against Punjab Kings.

Young Dane Malewar has replaced veteran Rohit Sharma.

Hardik Pandya-led Mumbai Indians have taken several bold decisions to take on Shubman Gill’s Gujarat Titans. The blue team has debuted two exciting talents. Krish Bhagat and Danish Malewar will make their debut in the Indian Premier League with the Mumbai Indians.

Denmark’s Malewar will pair up with Quinton de Kock to open the innings, while Krish Bhagat will be responsible for the bowling duties.

MI’s bowling coach declared that Rohit Sharma was ‘fit’.

Ahead of the GT vs MI match, Mumbai Indians bowling coach Paras Mhambrey reported that the batsman did well in the nets. In the pre-match press conference, he provided an update on another injured player, Mitchell Santner. Santner plays tonight’s game; replaced starter, Ryan Rickelton.

“Both of them are fit. In fact, if you are just walking along the nets here, if you just look at Rohit Sharma’s batting. So yes, he is working on it. Santner is fit. So, unfortunately, we missed him (Santner) in the last game, we picked up a mistake. It’s not something we could do. But both of them are fit, yes,” Mhambrey told the media.

After his comments, it was assumed that Rohit Sharma could play against GT, at least as an impact substitute. But when the team announced, there was no sign of the ‘Hitman’.

It will be interesting to see how the five-time IPL winners perform against the Gujarat Titans without the experienced opener. At the Narendra Modi Stadium, MI has never been able to defeat GT in the past. During the match, eyes will be on debutants Krish Bhagat and Denmark’s Malewar. To keep the IPL 2026 play-off dream alive, Mumbai will have to register a clear victory against Gujarat.
