Washington Sundar’s credentials have increased significantly after his heroics in the ongoing Test series against New Zealand.
Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) was the second best team in IPL 2024 and finished runners-up of the season. Looking ahead to the upcoming season, SRH has retained as many as five international players and utilized INR 75 crore.
They have retained their core, which performed exceptionally last season. They have made prudent decisions and will seek to prepare a strong team around them.

As of the latest retention announcements, SRH has secured the services of five limited players:

Why SRH can’t use RTM on Washington Sundar in IPL 2025 auction
As per IPL guidelines, a team can retain up to five limited-over players through holds before the auction or by using Right To Match (RTM) during the auction. Additionally, a maximum of two players can be retained without limits, but the total number of retentions must not exceed six.
There is no limit for Indian or foreign players. So in SRH’s case, they have already retained five international players, leaving no room for more international retentions, and Washington Sundar is limited.
SRH can use an RTM on one of their uncapped players, but not on Sundar or any capped players. They have exhausted their maximum hold before the auction.
What can Sunrisers Hyderabad do to get Washington Sundar back?
Sunrisers Hyderabad may have exhausted all five retentions, but there is still a way to get Washington Sundar back. They can bid on it again during the auction and get it back by giving the highest sum.
That’s the only way to get it back. He will be up for sale during the IPL 2025 auction and will be chased by several teams following his recent promotion.
The good thing is that no other team can increase their price once their offer ends since it was only with SRH. Therefore, SRH could chase him during the auction.
