Will Babar Azam be demoted? Peshawar head coach Zalmi reveals captain’s batting position

Pakistani batsman Babar Azam is considered one of the best batsmen in modern cricket. Babar has scored many runs while opening the batting for his national team, however, there has been a dip in the former Pakistan captain’s form in recent days.

Babar Azam He will be seen playing in the Pakistan Super League during Peshawar Zalmi. Zalmi head coach Mohammad Akram spoke about Babar’s batting position in PSL 9. According to Akram, he stated that the management has no problem with Babar batting in any position but the former Pakistani captain mainly likes to open.

He said, “We have no objection to Babar Azam playing in any position, but he prefers to open. Babar Azam is the captain of the team and he has performed well in the starting position.”

Peshawar Zalmi will play their opening match of Pakistan Super League 2024 against Quetta Gladiators on February 18 at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. Zalmi won their last PSL title in 2017 and will want to repeat the heroics in 2024.

Babar Azam’s form has also been one of the main reasons behind Pakistan’s dismal performance in international cricket in recent times. Babar has failed to score runs against quality pace attacks, while he has only scored fifties and hundreds against low-ranked teams. Babar has failed to finish a single match for Pakistan in the last few months, resulting in a whitewash in the Tests against Australia and also a 4-1 loss in the T20Is against New Zealand.

Babar Azam along with Mohammad Rizwan have won many matches for Pakistan while opening for the team. This includes the iconic ten-wicket win against India during the T20 World Cup 2021. However, since the two were apart, things have not been easy for Pakistan in the shortest international format.

Due to his drop in form, Babar Azam resigned from Pakistan captaincy after the team failed to reach the last 16 of the 2023 ODI World Cup.

The ninth edition of the Pakistan Super League will begin on February 17, while the final of the tournament will be played on March 18. There will be 34 matches in total, with Karachi hosting the majority: 11 of them. The National Bank Stadium will also host the playoffs, two qualifiers and the final match.

Since its launch in 2016, the Pakistan Super League has established itself as one of the biggest T20 competitions in the world. Like the Indian Premier League, the Pakistan Super League (PSL) provides young Pakistani athletes with the opportunity to represent their country on the international stage and play for the national team.

While the other franchises – Peshawar Zalmi, Karachi Kings, Islamabad United, Multan Sultans and Quetta Gladiators – have an equal chance of taking home the trophy in 2024, Lahore Qalandars have won the last two editions of the Pakistan Super League.
