Former Indian cricketer WV Raman has reacted to the appointment of Gautam Gambhir as the head coach of the Indian national cricket team. The former head coach of the women’s team congratulated the Kolkata Knight Riders mentor on his new job in the national team.

Gautam Gambhir was appointed as the head coach of the Indian National Cricket Team on Tuesday, July 9. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCC) released the official statement regarding the development as Rahul Dravid’s tenure ended after the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Gautam Gambhir and WV Raman were reportedly interviewed by the BCCI CAC committee for the head coach post. However, it was the Kolkata Knight Riders mentor who got the nod and was selected and will take charge of the team for the next cycle.

When Gautam Gambhir was appointed as the head coach of the Indian national cricket team, WV Raman sent out a congratulatory message for his competition. Taking to his Twitter account, he wrote, “Congratulations @GautamGambhir and all the best to you.”

Gautam Gambhir was in the news as the head coach of India ever since Kolkata Knight Riders won the IPL 2024. He was the mentor of the team and did a great job which impressed the Board of Control for Cricket in India and hence they approached him for the job in the Indian National Cricket Team.

Gautam Gambhir will take charge of the Indian national cricket team on the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka. India will travel to the island nation for three ODI matches and three T20I series later this month.

Gautam Gambhir has not coached any team and this will be his first stint as a coach of a team. He has played the role of a mentor in the Indian Premier League. The former India captain was the mentor of Lucknow Super Giants for two years and also played the same role at KKR this year.

Gautam Gambhir has reportedly been given the post till the 2027 World Cup. He will have some big tasks on his way as India will be touring Australia for Tests and after that, there will be the ICC Champions Trophy and the ICC World Test Championship final.

BCCI President Roger Binny spoke about the appointment of Gautam Gambhir as the head coach of the Indian national cricket team. He said that it marks a new chapter in Indian cricket and asserted that KKR, the mentor, is the ideal candidate to take the team forward. He said:

“Team India now embarks on a journey under the leadership of a new coach – Mr Gautam Gambhir. His appointment as the Head Coach marks a new chapter for Indian cricket. His experience, dedication and vision for the game make him the ideal candidate to guide our team forward. We are confident that under his leadership, Team India will continue to excel and make the nation proud.”
