Harsha Bhogle and Dinesh Karthik have praised Yashasvi Jaiswal after her impressive century against England in the ongoing IND vs ENG second Test in Hyderabad. The Indian opener stood firm at one end and led the team’s charge with the bat as his experienced teammates failed to deliver. No batsman could score a fifty on the opening day of the Test as Yashasvi Jaiswal bailed out the hosts. At stumps, India were 336 for 6 and the first match scored 179 of those runs. He smashed 17 fours and 5 sixes in his knock.
The Mumbai star mixed caution with aggression during his knock. He was comfortable defending the balls when the English players were playing well and he quickly changed gears whenever a loose ball came his way. The 22-year-old reached his first Test century at home in style by smashing a six over long on. And although it is not his first century in Tests, Bhogle believes the knock marked his arrival on the international stage.
“I have seen this young man for a while now. We saw him in Rajasthan Royals and he looked good. He started scoring hundreds for Mumbai. So you thought he’s not just a white ball hitter. He then went and scored 170. In his Test debut, he scored 86.
“He played with freedom. These, I believe, are the entries that will tell us. Although he is on a good batting surface because of the temperament he showed. These are the entries that will tell us that Yashasvi Jaiswal is here,” Bhogle told Cricbuzz.
“Look what the scorecard is without Yashasvi Jaiswal. These 20. There are 30. And these are experienced players. None of them continued and got a big score. He reached the hundred with a six in the penultimate over of the day. We thought, is he tired? They are massaging his hands. He rolls a six,” he added.
Dinesh Karthik praises Yashasvi Jaiswal:
Dinesh Karthik also praised Yashasvi Jaiswal. The veteran wicketkeeper-batsman, who plies his trade as a commentator in the ongoing series, said he liked the hunger and determination of the opener. Karthik made it clear that he was impressed with Jaiswal’s attitude and saw him outperform his illustrious teammates.
“What I liked was the hunger and determination. He had a lot of players with a lot more experience playing with him today. But he chose to be the man who would stay from the beginning to the end,” Karthik said.
“I played with great pace, made some nice shots. And that will always be the case with Yashasvi Jaiswal. There is no doubt about it. He is someone who will always look great with shots. Technically he also plays very well. Good for the short ball for fast bowlers and spinners. He is undoubtedly a very good player,” he added.
Meanwhile, Jaiswal completed his double century on the second day. It is his first double century in Tests. At the time of writing this report, he was unbeaten on 209 off 288 balls, while India were on 383 off 7. Kuldeep Yadav was unbeaten on 1 at the other end.
England are currently leading the five-match series after winning the first Test in Hyderabad. The visitors stunned Team India by 28 runs to go 1-0 in the series.
