Chasing 281 to win, Australia are 107 for 3 at the end of Day 4 and need another 174 runs to win. Usman Khawaja, the early innings centurion, was unbeaten in 34 with night watchman Scott Boland unbeaten in 13.

Ollie Robinson sacked David Warner to end a 61-race run with Khawaja. Stuart Broad then chose the wickets of Marnus Labuschagne (13) and Steve Smith to get England back into the game. The hosts are now seven wickets away from winning the first Test.

Australia are 174 away from winning the first test on day 5. They are the defending champions of the Ashes series, having won it 4-0 at home in the 2021-22 series. The will of the Lord will house the second ash test from June 28 to July 2. Headingly will host the third test from July 6 to 10. Manchester (July 19-23) and The Oval (July 27-31) will host the final two Test matches to conclude the series.
