AUS vs ENG: Darren Lehmann Feels David Warner Will Get “One More Test” To Save His Career

Former Australia national cricket team Head coach Darren Lehmann has opined that team management will give senior leadoff hitter David Warner “one more test” before making a decision on his future in the game’s longer format.

Questions have been raised about Warner’s place in the team following his flop at Ashes 2023. The opening hitter has recorded just one 50+ score so far and has struggled against nemesis Stuart Broad. In 6 innings, he has posted scores of 9, 36, 66, 25, 4 and 1.

Warner has expressed his desire to retire from Test cricket on home soil early next year. However, with his consecutive failures, many experts have opined that the decision on the future of Warner could not be left in his hands.

Meanwhile, Darren Lehmann has backed Warner to enter the fourth Ashes Test 2023. He believes Warner is one of the all-time greats and Australia would back him rather than hit the panic button after defeat.

“I think they will stay with him. Old Trafford is traditionally a very good batting wicket. I think they will trust him for one more test,” Lehmann told RSN on Monday, as quoted by news.com.au.

“He’s been a great player and obviously Stuart Broad has his measure. My gut tells me they’re not going to make a change now, they’re not going to panic. They have done very well in the first two games and Warner played well when there was something.

“I would give it one more, just knowing Old Trafford and what it is like. She adapts to David’s way of playing. He will come out very aggressive in the next test match, he will take over the game. Davey has all the chips for this match, a bit like when he got 200 against South Africa”.

They will make the only trade, Scott Boland for Josh Hazlewood – Darren Lehmann

Darren Lehmann further spoke about the composition of Australia’s team for the fourth test. He opined that Australia will have to retain Mitchell Marsh in the playing XI alongside David Warner, meaning Cameron Green has to wait to return to the playing XI.

Lehmann added that there is only one change he hopes Australia will make in the pace department. The former manager believes that Josh Hazlewood will return to the playing XI, replacing Scott Boland.

“I think they still have to play Mitchell Marsh,” Lehmann told RSN.

“The noise will increase over the next week if Cameron Green is fit. He was bowling yesterday, so you’d think he’d be good to go. It’s a difficult time being a selector right now. Do you stay with David Warner? I’d keep him for one more and keep Marsh, which probably means Cameron Green is lost, and that’s a tough call because he’s a superstar.”

“They can change, I don’t know, but they seem to be pretty controlled in what they do. They are 2-1 up… I don’t think they will panic.

“I think they will trade Scott Boland for Josh Hazlewood and then summarize what they do with Davey. If he doesn’t get any runs and they win, they can say ‘this is your swan song’. It will be interesting to see what happens.”

The fourth Test between England led by Ben Stokes and Australia led by Pat Cummins will be played from 19-23 July. The match will take place at Old Trafford, Manchester.
