Michael Vaughan criticizes England’s field effort:

Speaking to Cricbuzz at the end of the game on day one, Michael Vaughan came down hard on Jonny Bairstow and England. The former England captain stated that while he would like to see the team’s management make a change, he conceded that Bairstow is unlikely to be removed from ground-keeping duties.

“I don’t think they are going to play, they will continue with Jonny (Bairstow)”, Vaughan said. “It has cost England. I was absolutely behind keeping it going before this series, but sometimes you have to accept that maybe there’s a better option.”

“The Australians have had 3 chances and they took all 3. It’s obvious to everyone to see that the chances England have missed have cost them dearly and they probably went down 0-2 because of that.”

“And when the contrast is so different with Australia not having 7 and England having 14, so double the number and there’s another five medium chances that Cameron Green will gobble up too.” added.

Speaking further, Vaughan stated that England haven’t really managed to do well at the things they can control on the pitch, as he pointed out their problems with catching and bowling extras.

“Catch, extras: things you can really control and work, England have not done quite right.” Vaughan said.

“And they are 0-2 down in the series and today because of their (England) catching, Australia are on par in terms of leveling this game today. England should be ahead of the game, but we get to Day 2 with England. He needs to hit well and not give Australia a 50-60 run lead, which would be criminal.” added.

With England losing receptions, Australia rallied from 85 for 4 to score 263 runs. In response, England got off to a poor start with the bat and were on 68 for 3 at stumps. The hosts need to win the game to keep their hopes of winning the series alive after losing the first two Tests.
