Australia names squad for first Test against India in Perth, set to unleash debutant Nathan McSweeney

Australia have named fast bowler Scott Boland in their squad for the Perth Test against India later this month.

The 13-member team also includes Nathan McSweeney, who is expected to open the batting with Usman Khawaja.

McSweeney didn’t have a great performance against India A in the unofficial second on a difficult wicket, but his recent performances in the Sheffield Shield and his first-class record helped him edge out Marcus Harris and Sam Konstas. He also played an important role in the first unofficial test.

“Nathan has shown the attributes that we believe will prepare him well for Test cricket along with a strong recent record in domestic cricket,” said George Bailey, Chairman of Selectors.

“His performances in South Australia and Australia weighed in his favor and support our view that he is ready for the opportunity at Test level.”

Also in the team is Josh Inglis, who is now a constant in the limited overs teams. Inglis will battle for the goalkeeping spot with Alex Carey.

“Josh has had great exposure in the Sheffield Shield competition and deserves his place in his first Test team,” Bailey said.

Scott Boland returns

Boland returns to the team after falling out of favor when his incredible start to Test cricket began to fall off the radar.

Boland will back up the trio of Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc.

“Scott has performed first class when given the opportunity at Test level and remains a valuable member of the team,” the selector said.

“The team is balanced and provides Andrew and Pat with the options they need for what makes for a compelling series.”

Nathan Lyon is the only player on the team.

Apart from McSweeney and the call-up of Inglis, who will lead the Australian team in the T20Is against Pakistan and the third ODI, there are few surprises in the team.

The middle order is loaded with solid options in Steve Smith, Marcus Labuschagne, Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head. Carey will likely take the gloves with Inglis as backup.
