Australia on top, India settle for No. 3 after latest ICC Rankings update

The Australian men’s cricket team is at the top of the test rankings. In the recently released annual rankings, Australia are shown to remain at the top of the World Test Championship points table with 87.50 per cent, while New Zealand, who are second in the rankings, have a win ratio of 77.78 per cent in the current World Test Championship cycle.

Like the men’s cricket team, Australia’s women’s cricket team had dominated the One Day International format during last year’s cycle. Despite a slight drop of two rating points to 163, they are first in the format, with England in second place on 128 points, still trailing by a significant margin despite a two-point gain.

Australia’s national cricket teams dominate in multiple formats; India is ranked number 3

“The annual ranking update considers all matches played since May 2025 at full weight (100 percent), while the results of the previous two years are taken into account at 50 percent,” the International Cricket Council (ICC) reported in the official statement on the first day of May 2026.

“The annual update had no impact on the top two spots in the men’s Test rankings, and Australia continued its reign at No. 1, strengthening its position with a three-point rise to 131,” he added.

Australia remains firmly on top with 131 rating points, extending its dominance with a slight gain of three points. Just behind them, reigning world Test champions South Africa also held steady in second place, improving to 119 points.

India has risen to third place in the annual ICC men’s Test team rankings. India moved up one place to reach 104 points, overtaking England, who fell to fourth place with 102 points after losing in multiple crucial matches with the Whites in the recent past.

Along with India, Pakistan has also made significant gains in the points table, displacing Sri Lanka.

The annual ranking and the WTC ranking are not similar

It is important to note that the annual rankings and current WTC rankings are not similar. Although Team India secured third place in the annual rankings, it is in sixth position in the WTC points table.

India currently remains in the sixth position in the 2025-27 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle with just 48.15 PCT, having lost the home series against South Africa and the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) on Australian soil in the ongoing cycle, with Australia topping the table with 87.50 PCT and New Zealand being second with 77.78 PCT.

ICC women’s ODI rankings largely unchanged

ICC, in its official press release, informed that the Women’s ODI Rankings keep the top six spots unchanged. Australia’s lead has fallen four points, but it still sits at an impressive rating of 163. England has increased its lead over India from one to four points and is at 128. India (124), South Africa (100), New Zealand (93) and Sri Lanka (89) are the other teams maintaining their positions.
