Shivam Mavi ruled out IPL 2026; Sunrisers Hyderabad rope in RS Ambrish as injury replacement

Sunrisers Hyderabad pacer Shivam Mavi has been ruled out of IPL 2026 with a groin injury, the franchise said on Friday.

Mavi, a right-arm medium pacer, was yet to play a match for the franchise in IPL 2026. In fact, he has not played any IPL match since 2022. Mavi has had a history of battling injuries, which have hampered his career.

After failing to sell out in IPL 2025, Mavi was picked up by SRH for his base price of INR 75 lakh in 2026.

Shivam Mavi replaced by RS Ambrish

Ambrish is a bowling all-rounder from Tamil Nadu who bats left-handed and bowls right-arm medium pace. Ambrish was also part of the Indian team that won the U-19 World Cup earlier this year.

In that tournament, he took 11 wickets in 7 matches and was India’s highest wicket-taker. He will join SRH at its base price of INR 30 lakh.

Earlier this year, Ambrish made his First Class debut for Tamil Nadu in the Ranji Trophy.

Shivam Mavi’s career

Like her replacement, Mavi has also been under-19 world champion. Mavi was part of the Prithvi Shaw-led Indian team that won the tournament in 2018.

His ability to generate pace even at that young age impressed Kolkata Knight Riders enough to shell out INR 3 crore for him that year.

Between 2018 and 2022, Mavi took 30 wickets in 32 matches for the three-time champions. In early 2023, he made his T20I debut for India.

On debut, Shivam Mavi took a four-wicket haul against Sri Lanka and became the third Indian player to take a four-wicket haul on his T20I debut. However, in his next five matches, he took only three wickets and has not played for India since.

In 2023, Gujarat Titans had signed him for INR 6 crore but did not play against him in any match. The following year, he joined Lucknow Super Giants for INR 6.4 crore, but a rib injury ruled him out.

SRH next match

Sunrisers Hyderabad will take on Kolkata Knight Riders in Hyderabad on May 3. SRH already beat KKR in this year’s tournament once before.

The return of regular captain Pat Cummins has emboldened their bowling attack, which in turn has led to them going on a five-match winning streak.

Currently, SRH is third in the points table while KKR is eighth. The 2016 champions will arguably help their chances of extending their winning streak to six games in a row.
