The Indian Premier League (IPL) Classic ended with an entertaining duel between the Mumbai Indians (MI) and the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Wankhede Stadium, the home of the blue team.
Players from both sides showed brilliant moments in their respective innings. Mumbai were watching the front seat as their bowlers picked up the wicket one after another.
Sanju Samson made the difference between MI and CSK
Chennai Super Kings’ star opener Sanju Samson once again stood tall when the team was in deep trouble. In the current season with the Yellow Brigade Samson recorded his second century. As wickets fell at regular intervals, Samson hit the ball with ease. He remained unbeaten for 101 runs off 54 balls, driven by 16 boundaries, including 10 fours and six 6s, and CSK posted 207 runs for 6 wickets.
After Samson, CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad was the second highest run-getter for the team, scoring 22 off 14, which showed how Samson carried the team on his trusty shoulders throughout the innings.
It was not easy to attack the wicket
Since the 2026 T20 World Cup, the iconic Wankhede Stadium has witnessed multiple high-scoring matches. Cricket fans were hoping to see another excellent contest between the batsmen of both teams tonight.
For Mumbai Indians, Allah Ghazanfar and Ashwani Kumar scored a double each. A wicket each for Jasprit Bumrah and Mitchell Santner.
Mumbai Indians hit hard as soon as the second innings started. Quinton de Kock, Denmark’s Malewar and Naman Dhir lost their wickets in the powerplay. In the third over of the second innings, Mumbai Indians lost three batsmen for just 11 runs on the scoreboard.
CSK won the match against Mumbai by a whopping 103 runs.
Mumbai Indians never looked confident enough to recover from the early blows. Middle-order batsmen Hardik Pandya and Tilak Varma tried for a while to hold their own against the Chennai Super Kings bowlers but that did not last long. As soon as Varma and Yadav were removed from the crease, the rest of MI’s batting line-up collapsed like a house of cards.
CSK, after losing the toss, went to bat first and scored 207 runs in 20 overs, which was more than enough to overcome the Hardik Pandya-led Mumbai Indians.
The home team managed to score only 104 runs in 19 overs before the last batsman fell. It is worth noting that before the match, CSK’s emerging talent Mukesh Choudhary lost his mother yesterday, and yet he played the match and bowled well, taking 31/1.
“It was quite tough on him (Mukesh Choudhary), I would dedicate this win to him. All the glory to him. Everyone contributed and wanted to be there for him. It feels good (about the win). My intuition wanted me to bat first. Sanju and I said it was not going well,” CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad said after the match.
“Everyone contributed very well. Even the 20s helped. Sanju played a magnificent knock and took us home. We have been doing well; it is just starting to click. We are trying to cover all the bases. Mukesh to Quinton, that set the momentum. It started very well. It is a blessing to have Akeal and Noor. Everyone is settling in. Everyone is calm and collected. We are starting from scratch, it is about assessment,” he added.
