TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, match number 33, was between the two most successful franchises, Mumbai Indians (MI), taking on Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Wankhede Stadium. Fans turned out in large numbers for the decisive match. This was the first MI vs CSK match without MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma in the playing XI.
CSK beat MI by 103 runs. It was a resounding victory for the Men in Yellow. MI captain Hardik Pandya won the toss and elected to field first. The five-time winners played against the same team that won in their last match against the Gujarat Titans. CSK made changes with Ayush Mhatre ruled out, Akeal Hosein and Kartik Sharma coming in.

After being invited to bat first, Sanju Samson got off to a steady start with Ruturaj Gaikwad scoring aggressively, and the CSK captain scored 22 valuable runs in 14 balls. Then Sanju took over and scored his goal at a good pace. Then some short innings by Sarfaraz Khan and Dewald Brevis scored 14 and 21 runs respectively.
Sanju got his second fifty of IPL 2026 in 26 balls, and Kartik Sharma disappointed again as he was dismissed for 18 runs. However, Smason stayed till the end and scored a brilliant century and helped Chennai surpass the 200-run mark as they scored 207/6 with Sanju unbeaten with a score of 101* runs.
Going out to chase, MI got off to a horrible start as they lost three wickets in two overs, with a score of 11/3 and Akeal Hosein picking two wickets in his first two overs. The first wicket to fall was Denmark’s Malewar for a golden duck, and then it was Quinton de Kock who was dismissed by Mukesh Choudhary, and again Hosein struck as Naman Dhir departed.
MI could only reach 29/3 in the powerplay, which was a brilliant display of bowling by the Chennai bowlers. It was his lowest powerplay total in IPL 2026. Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma then formed a 73-run partnership, as the latter was dismissed for 37 runs, with Akeal picking his third of the match.
The Mumbai team went down like nine bowlers losing four wickets in the space of four runs, after the loss of Suryakumar Yadav, who was the second highest scorer with 36 runs, and wickets continued to fall for the five-time winners. Shardul Thakur, who came on as a substitute for Mitchell Santner due to concussion, could only score 6 runs and MI were bowled out for 104 runs.
