Gujarat Titans tag Jason Holder as ‘world class’ replacement for Hardik Pandya

Gujarat Titans director of cricket Vikram Solanki has praised the team’s new Caribbean recruit, all-rounder Jason Holder.

Holder joined the Gujarat Titans only in IPL 2026 after previous stints in five other franchises, with the longest being at Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Holder had to wait for his opportunity in GT and did not manage to enter until the eighth match of the tournament.

Against Royal Challengers Bengaluru on April 30, Holder enjoyed a particularly productive night. While GT bowled out RCB for just 155, Holder took 2 wickets and 3 catches, including a controversial one from RCB captain Rajat Patidar.

With the bat, Holder made just 12 runs, but his stand of 30 with Rahul Tewatia put the game firmly in favor of GT.

“Jason Holder is world class” – Vikram Solanki

Solanki spoke in the post-match press conference. Solanki said that despite playing for a long time, Holder was only getting better with each passing game.

“He’s shown over the years in international cricket and in franchise cricket how measured he is, and I think he’s only getting better. He talked about understanding his game and that, of course, comes with experience. Any player who has played for as long, around the world as he has, has led teams like him, international teams and been part of different teams, starts to understand what needs to be done in any given situation, and Jason is certainly doing that,” he said.

In 2025, Jason Holder broke the record for most wickets by a bowler in a single calendar year in T20 cricket.

“He’s smart” – Solanki on Jason Holder

Solanki went on to say that Jason Holder has been important for GT not only with bat and ball but also with his ability to read the situation of a match.

“We were very excited when he made the team. He had to bide his time before getting a chance, but since he got a chance in every game he has played, making good contributions and on the field today,” Solanki continued.

“He has been brilliant with the ball, he has fantastic skill with the bat in terms of his ability to hit a cricket ball, but he is also quite intelligent to play exactly the way he needs to in any kind of situation, and that partnership with Rahul Tewatia is exactly an example of that,” he added.

“He has added a new dimension to his game” – Solanki

Solanki was all praise for Holder’s physical attributes, namely his tall physique and physical strength.

“He is physically a strong guy, he has great reach, influence when it comes to the ball, so all the technicalities are sort of covered. Now he is also bringing an extra dimension, that of being a really experienced defender and I think that is what is happening, that is what we are seeing in front of us now,” Solanki concluded.

GT’s next match

GT will host Punjab Kings at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on May 3 for their next match.

PBKS saw their unbeaten streak snapped in the last match, while GT remains optimistic with two dominant wins in a row. They will want it to be three in a row.
