The fifth match of the Indian Premier League 2024 (IPL 2024) was played between Hardik Pandya-led Mumbai Indians (MI) and Shubman Gill-led Gujarat Titans (G.T.) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, March 24.
Mumbai Indians won the toss and elected to play first in the match. This was Hardik Pandya’s first match as captain of the Mumbai Indians franchise and he did not receive a good reception from the crowd in Ahmedabad. The fans booed him several times and bombarded the all-rounder with Rohit-Rohit chants.
Meanwhile, batting first, all GT batsmen made a good contribution and posted a decent total of 168/6 on the board. Newly appointed GT captain Shubman Gill scored 31 runs and batted at a strike rate of 140.90. The team’s top run-getter in the innings was youngster Sai Sudharsan, who scored a brilliant 45 runs off 39 balls.
Chasing the target in the match, Mumbai Indians got off to a poor start as star opener Ishan Kishan was out of danger. Notably, IPL 2024 is crucial for the young batsman to return to the Indian team as he was recently excluded from the BCCI’s central contract list.
After the dismissal of Ishan Kishan, Rohit Sharma batted superbly well and showed his class. He was involved in excellent youth partnerships and led MI very close to victory. The former Mumbai Indians captain was dismissed after scoring 43 runs off 29 balls.
MI debutant Naman Dhir showed his brilliant batting while batting at number 3 position but could only score 20 runs. Unlike Dhir, Dewald Brevis took his time but made sure to make significant contributions. He contributed 46 runs and played a key role in MI getting closer to victory.
However, in the end, Mumbai Indians lost the match by 6 runs as star batsmen Hardik Pandya, Tim David and Tilak Varma could not get the job done for the team.
For Gujarat Titans, Umesh Yadav and Mohit Sharma were the stars with the ball and ensured that Mumbai Indians did not cross the goal line.
