Finally, some relief for Mumbai Indians (MI). After suffering four losses in a row, they bounced back strongly. Against the Gujarat Titans (GT), at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, he achieved the necessary victory in a resounding manner.
Along with these two points, there are also multiple positive conclusions for MI. With Tilak Varma’s century, Naman Dhir’s timely counter-attack, Jasprit Bumrah’s first wicket and a dominant force in bowling, Mumbai Indians will be eager to continue the momentum in the rest of the season.
Jasprit Bumrah’s losing streak is over for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2026 season
More than the batting jobs, it was MI’s bowlers who shaped the team’s smooth path to the goal. Bumrah made the breakthrough on the first ball of the second over with GT opener Sai Sudharsan. The Titans’ two other in-form batsmen, Jos Buttler and Shubman Gill, also came quickly into the powerplay.
Impact player Ahswini Kumar completed her 4 over spells with 4 wickets in her bag for an economy rate of just 6.00. Kumar claimed the wickets of Gill, Rahul Tewatia, Shahrukh Khan and Rashid Khan.
Tilak Varma was exceptional tonight
Batting first, Mumbai Indians managed to confirm a competitive total of 199 runs for 5 wickets in 20 overs, mainly thanks to middle-order batsman Tilak Varma’s century. The 23-year-old batsman scored his first century when the team needed it the most.
Naman Dhir’s 45 innings was also important for the team. At one point in the first innings, MI were 44 for 3. From there, they managed to claim 199 runs.
Varma’s unbeaten contribution of 101 runs was off 45 balls. I needed eight 4’s and seven 6’s to decorate the impressive entrances. In response, GT, who lost wickets between short intervals, got just 100 runs for his 10 batsmen. In 15.5 overs, Mumbai Indians won the match. MI won the match by 99 runs.
Shubman Gill explained why they suffered the tough defeat against Mumbai Indians.
“Honestly, I think we gave away too many runs in the mid overs. On a wicket like that, I think 160-170 was an even score. But I think there are a lot of lessons for us from this game. I mean, a little setback, but now we have a couple of games away from home, so hopefully we will get back to the winning side again,” Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill said after the match.
“I think the wicket was a little bit slower. I don’t think we got into the right areas. The length of the ball wasn’t progressing as well; some balls came, some didn’t and some stayed low.”
“I think we could have hit that length in the middle overs a little more consistently, which we couldn’t do. (Did the pitch change when they were batting?) I think it was pretty similar. If anything, it could have been a little better because I think there was a little more dew when we were batting,” Shubman Gill added.
