ICC World Cup 2023: Ex-PCB Chairman Khalid Mahmood Slams Pakistan Government’s Decision To Form Committee To Decide Team’s Participation In WC

Former Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Khalid Mahmood criticized the Pakistani government’s decision to form a high-level committee to decide the team’s participation in the 2023 ICC World Cup in India. He said that this is not how things should be done as no PCB member is on the committee.

Excitement for the 2023 ICC World Cup is growing as preparations progress. But amidst all this involvement of the Pakistan cricket team in the event it remains a great talking point. PCB recently mentioned that their participation in the tournament will depend on government authorization.

However, the Pakistani government created a high-profile committee to discuss the Pakistan cricket team’s participation in the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup in India. The committee will make recommendations on Pakistan’s travel plans to India, Pakistan’s four-city Indian tour and its match against India at the Narendra Modi International Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Pakistan will play its matches in Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai and Kolkata. But the long-awaited clash against India will be played at the Narendra Modi International Stadium in Ahmedabad on October 15. It was learned that they will send a security delegation before the tournament to inspect the venues.

However, the formation of the committee did not go well with former PCB Chairman Khalid Mahmood saying that they are mixing two things and linking Pakistan’s participation in the World Cup to the Asian Cup situation. Speaking in an interview, he said (quoted by PTI):

“The interesting thing is that no representative of the main stakeholder, the Pakistan Cricket Board, is on the committee. While I agree that there is no justification for India not to tour Pakistan now, this is not how things are done internationally.

“If you say that we are looking at the security situation before deciding to send a team to India, that makes sense, but to say outright that if India does not come to Pakistan, we will not send the team to India for the World Cup either. , is mixing both, which we have never done.

ICC World Cup 2023: “I hope Zaka Ashraf will face an awkward situation when he attends ICC meetings,” says Khalid Mahmood

Khalid Mahmood went on to say that when he was president, his security team addressed the situation and they were ready to go to India. He also commented that the new president will face an awkward situation when he attends the ICC meetings. He explained:

“When I was president in 1999, despite the threats from India, we ourselves assessed the security situation of our team, sent a delegation to India and informed the government that we were ready to go to India.

“I expect Zaka Ashraf to face a awkward situation, when I attend the ICC meetings later this week, due to the formation of this committee and the statement made by the minister, Ahsan Mazari”, he concluded.
