How MS Dhoni’s simple advice transforms Ayush Mhatre as captain
Meanwhile, Young Chennai Super Kings batsman Ayush Mhatre opened up about a simple piece of advice he received from MS Dhoni that changed everything for him.
Mhatre was still new to captaincy when he was leading India Under-19. There was pressure, confusion, and many moments where things didn’t go as planned. Fortunately, he was part of the CSK camp since IPL 2025, where he got a chance to talk to Dhoni and understand how a leader should think.

At that point, Mhatre asked Dhoni, one of the all-time greatest captains the game has ever seen, how to stay in control when the game starts to slip away. Dhoni simply suggested to the young leader not to take decisions when he was angry or frustrated, and that made a big difference for him.
‘Never make decisions when you’re angry’
Ayush Mhatre said in a video shared by the IPL: “Last year, I had the opportunity to play with Mahi bhai. I was the captain of the Indian under-19 team at that time. I spoke to him about captaincy after the IPL and asked him for advice as it was my first time as captain. He advised me to stay calm on the field and never take decisions when angry. He said, “Sometimes there will be frustration due to opposition associations, but if you maintain calm down for that short period of time and just breathe and wait for it to pass, you will be able to make good decisions.’”
Notably, the 18-year-old batting sensation has now become the key part of CSK’s setup, and has so far amassed 171 runs in 5 innings in the ongoing IPL 2026.
