Australian opener David Warner discussed batting with a badly bruised hand on Day 1 of the second Test of the current ashes series At the Lord’s Cricket Ground. David Warner admitted that his hand is a bit sore at the moment and will be examined by media staff after the game.

The 36-year-old suffered a blow to his hands from a throw from Indian pacer Mohammed Shami during the World Test Championship (WTC) final. In addition, he was hit in the nets by hitting coach Michael Di Venuto while he was practicing take-downs before the second Test against England.

I had my hand in an ice cube all afternoon – David Warner

After the opening day play, david warner revealed that he had been keeping his hand in an ice bucket all afternoon.

“He’s taken a beating in the last two games, and in the nets, so he’s a little sore at the moment, a little bruised, but I’ll just see how we do after the game and I think we’ll look at him then. At the moment it is quite tender ”, Warner said.

“[I was] never in doubt, [but] I was pretty sore. Initially it was more in the palm of my hand, I have a hotspot where my thumb is and every time the ball hits the bat it just shakes. So today I got hit back on the knuckle and I think Mohammed Shami hit me. [on] in that World Test Championship.

I’ve had my hand in an ice cube all afternoon, so we’ll play it by ear and evaluate it after the game.” added.

Despite these injury concerns, Warner showed resilience and performed well, scoring 66 runs from 88 balls in Australia’s first innings. He was under pressure after calling to bat first in cloudy conditions at Lord’s.

A big one could be right around the corner – David Warner

The veteran starter stated that he feels good about his hitting, adding that big innings could be just around the corner.

“I have felt in total control the last six to eight months with my game. I’m moving towards the ball, my feet are moving, not just playing with my hands. I felt like I was in for something special in the World Test Championship final. And then the last game, same thing. I feel like everything I’m putting on the networks is coming out in the middle.

“I’m excited about it and I think if I can keep going in there and keep that momentum going with my feet, a big one could be right around the corner.” He concluded.

Earlier, David Warner discussed his retirement plans in the game’s longer format. The veteran opener expressed his desire to retire from Test cricket in front of his home crowd at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) in January 2024.
