Sunrisers Hyderabad owner Kavya Maran could not control her emotions after her team’s dismal defeat against Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL 2024 final at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday (May 26).
KKR completely outclassed SRH to clinch the IPL title for the third time and first since 2014. It was one-way traffic throughout the game as KKR completely dominated the competition. Barring the toss, nothing went right for SRH as they lost to KKR for the third time in a row.
SRH started their season with a 4-run loss against the Kolkata-based team before suffering a crushing 8-wicket defeat against them in the first qualifier. They had a chance to avenge those losses in the finals, but were completely outclassed. KKR again beat SRH by 8 wickets to become the third team after Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings to win the title three times.
Batting first, SRH were bowled out for a paltry total of 113 runs in 19 overs. Mitchell Starc gave KKR a good start by dismissing Abhishek Sharma for two in the first over before Vaibhav Arora dismissed Travis Head in the second over. In the fifth over, Starc struck again to remove Rahul Tripathi and SRH simply could not recover from those early setbacks.
At one stage, they were reeling at 77 for 7 before a 24-run knock from Pat Cummins helped them post a respectable total. In reply, KKR lost the wicket of Sunil Narine early, but a fiery fifty from Venkatesh Iyer helped them reach the total with ease. Iyer scored an unbeaten 52 off 26 balls as KKR chased down the total in less than 11 overs losing just two wickets.
And while KKR crushed SRH’s dream of winning the IPL, their owner Kavya Maran looked absolutely distraught. He was seen crying in the stands as soon as the game ended. He also made sure to applaud the players’ efforts, but seemed absolutely inconsolable.
