LSG IPL 2026 Qualification Scenario: Can LSG Still Make Playoffs After Loss Against MI?

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) lost to Mumbai Indians by 6 wickets in the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. This was a virtual do-or-die battle for both sides as they were last on the points table. Mumbai Indians hosted LSG at the Wankhede Stadium, without their usual captain Hardik Pandya, with Suryakumar Yadav leading the team.

LSG have lost six games in a row, which has been a new low for the franchise, and remain at the bottom of the table with four points after winning just two games and losing seven. Rishabh Pant and the team will have to sort things out as soon as possible with five matches left.

LSG qualification scenario explained

After this defeat, the qualification for LSG seems bleak, although mathematically not null. After this defeat, their losing streak continued and worsened their already poor net run rate (NRR), leaving them needing to win all their remaining matches and relying heavily on other results. Coming into this match, both teams had the same points, but MI had one more game.

Now after this loss, their NRR has fought back, although they have four points, but the Super Giants need to win all the remaining games and put their run rate on the positive side, because even with 14 points and a negative run rate, they will not be able to qualify for the playoffs.

They have a chance to reach 14 points with one less game played than the Mumbai Indians. All remaining matches are treated as virtual knockouts from now on, and they must overcome a poor 2-3 home record at the Ekana Stadium to stay in contention when they face RCB in their next home match.

Nicholas Pooran’s fifty are in vain

Coming into the match, the Super Giants were invited to bat first and got off to a good start with their new opening combination in the form of Josh Inglis and Mitchell Marsh. Although the former couldn’t bother much despite the start, he returned with 13 runs.

Then a sensational 93-run partnership between Marsh and Nicholas Pooran put LSG in a strong position. The former scored 45 runs and Pooran returned to form just in time, scoring 63 runs off 21 deliveries and helping LSG to a big total. But the avalanche of wickets in between as they lost 5 wickets in the span of 43 runs.

Rohit Sharma Show at Wankhede Stadium

Aiden Markram and Himmat Singh ensured the Super Giants surpassed the 200-run mark as they scored 31* and 40* respectively as the visitors finished with a score of 288/5. Rohit Sharma returned to the team and what an innings he played along with Ryan Rickelton to set the stage for the 229-run chase.

The two formed a 143-run partnership for the first wicket and scored 83 and 84 runs respectively. Then it was the small contributions of Naman Dhir and Will Jacks, which made the run chase easier as they were unbeaten on 23 and 10 runs respectively, finishing the game with 8 balls to spare.
