An exciting match at the Wankhede Stadium on May 4 between the home team, Mumbai Indians, and the visiting team, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). Hardik Pandya missed the match due to a back spasm, Mumbai Indians said. Suryakumar Yadav was the stand-in captain of the team. Winning the toss, Yadav opted to bowl first.
Was it a wrong decision? The question started to arise when Rishabh Pant’s batsmen Mitchell Marsh and Nicholas Pooran were at the crease, batting at full speed. Bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah, Will Jacks, Deepak Chahar and Allah Ghazanfar were taken aback by Marsh and Pooran’s attacking approach.
A record innings for Lucknow Super Giants
Later, Himmat Singh also played a stunning knock to help Lucknow Super Giants score a massive total of 228 runs in the first innings in return for 5 wickets. It was one of the highest totals recorded by the team in its IPL history.
In this innings, Rishabh Pant’s team smashed a total of 16 maximums, the second most for them in an innings. In those sixteen 6s, Nicholas Pooran himself hit eight 6s and three with Marsh’s spade.
LSG dominated mainly in the powerplay and between 7 and 15 overs. In the powerplay they got 90 runs, and in the next phase of the innings it was 85 runs.
LSG continued to dominate in the first innings
The Lucknow Super Giants batsmen were almost equally effective against the Mumbai Indians’ pacers and spinners. According to the statistics published by Cricbuzz, they managed 108 runs in 10 overs in return for a couple of wickets. And against the spinners, LSG amassed 120 runs in 10 overs in return for 3 wickets tonight.
All these statistics went in vain as Mumbai Indians scored a big win. The partnership of 143 runs for the opening stand was what decided the match. For Mumbai, Ryan Rickelton scored 83 runs while Rohit Sharma, who came in as an impact substitute, scored 84 runs.
Rishabh Pant expected more runs on the board against Mumbai Indians
Rishabh Pant said: “Definitely, the way we started, I think we should have got more runs. But there are definitely good signs. I can’t say that. Definitely the boys played freely, but in the end, I think they played well because they are used to these conditions, for sure.”
Rishabh Pant continued: “Look, we definitely had short runs of 10-15 because it was a 220-230 wicket for sure. And the way we started, we had that advantage over them. But at the same time, on a wicket like this, you can’t blame the bowlers all the time. They have been doing a fantastic job for us. So I definitely can’t tell you much for sure. (What does the team need?) I think we need a bit of good luck man.”
“That’s all I’m going to say. (How to find luck?). Yes, I think there will be many blessings to solve it. And it will surely require a little more effort on our part.” Lucknow Super Giants captain Rishabh Pant said after the match.
