Mumbai Indians have faced their seventh defeat of the season and are now further behind in the competition with just two points from nine matches. They are on the verge of elimination, and any loss would surely exclude them from contention, even mathematically, as they have already been ruled out within rational limits.
The Mumbai Indians began this season, ending their 13-year curse of losing the first game of every season. However, this time they started with a victory but then lost four games in a row.
The Hardik Pandya-led team bounced back with Tilak Varma scoring a bit as MI players did their best in the only time of the season against the Gujarat Titans. Once again, they have had few wins since that victory against GT.
Mumbai Indians’ second loss against Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2026
Mumbai’s biggest concern is their poor form at their home ground, the Wankhede Stadium. Mumbai once again faced their arch-rivals, the Chennai Super Kings, having lost their previous match against the Super Kings at home.
MI have now lost another three matches in a row after their loss to the Chennai Super Kings. In the last three matches, they have lost two matches against CSK. The Super Kings shot first and helped them take an early lead over the visitors.
Naman Dhir’s half-century helped them reach 159 runs, while Ruturaj Gaikwad, the captain’s second half-century this season, and a huge 98-run partnership with youngster Kartik Sharma helped CSK claim their eighth point of the competition and move back to sixth position.
Do Mumbai Indians still have a chance of making the playoffs in IPL 2026?
Mumbai have so far lost seven matches, which means they have lost 50% of the matches meant to be played in the group stage of the IPL. After having played nine games, they only have five more games left this season.
Although 16 points are considered a sure block for teams to qualify for the playoffs, Mumbai earlier qualified with just 14 points and could aim for a similar stance this time too. However, to finish with only 14 points, they would have to win all their remaining games.
However, Mumbai will have to work hard to improve their net run rate and will also have to fancy their chances depending on the performance of other teams. Currently, they have a very poor net run rate of -0.803, but for all this to happen, many teams like Rajasthan Royals, Gujarat Titans, Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals will have to lose all the remaining matches.
Mumbai Indians’ remaining schedule comprises some vital matchups against heavyweights.
Mumbai Indians have five matches left this season. The matches include some high-value matches, including clashing against massive heavyweights like Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Punjab Kings and Rajasthan Royals.
Any further defeat would surely eliminate them from the competition as their chances of reaching even the 14-point mark will be doomed. There are two more matches, including one against weaker rival Lucknow Super Giants and the other against Kolkata Knight Riders, whom they defeated in their first match.
