Australia captain Pat Cummins has jokingly hinted that David Warner will not be part of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Warner played his last Test earlier this year against Pakistan in Sydney and officially stepped away from international cricket after the 2024 T20 World Cup. But recently, Warner surprised everyone by saying that he is open to a return for the series. India, though the team is still looking for a solid opening partner for Usman Khawaja.

“I’m always available, I just have to pick up the phone. I always speak very seriously. Let’s be honest, the boys have played a red-ball game since their last Test matches in February, so I’ve had almost the same preparation. Honestly, if they really needed me for this series, I’m more than happy to play the next Shield game and go out and play,” Warner told Code Sports.
Cummins, aware of Warner’s surprising comment about his return, had a funny response during his interview on YouTube podcast, The Grade Cricketer.
“Dave, we are very interested. “We’re taking this very seriously and we’ll be in touch, mate,” Cummins said. “I spoke to Dave a couple of days ago. I don’t remember if he reached out or I did… and he said, “What do you think? And I said, Yeah, good luck with Sydney Thunder and I’m looking forward to your comments on Fox.” he added.

Australia’s struggle to find a stable opening partner
Australia wants to improve after struggling against India in recent years. One of their biggest challenges is finding a good opener to partner Usman Khawaja. Players like Cameron Bancroft, Sam Konstas and Marcus Harris are being considered, but the team hasn’t made a final decision yet, so the spot is still open.
India will begin their tour of Australia with some practice matches and then play a five-match Test series starting November 22. Matches are scheduled to take place in Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney. Australia will be keen to regain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and finally break their 10-year losing streak against India.
