Former India player Ravichandran Ashwin marveled at GT captain Shubman Gill’s captaincy skills in IPL 2026.

Ashwin specifically praised Gill’s decision-making in GT’s four-wicket win over Royal Challengers Bangalore in Ahmedabad on April 30.

As the chase began, Shubman Gill set up GT for a flyer with a run of 24 from Josh Hazlewood. Jos Buttler also made an efficient cameo as the rest of the GT batsmen secured a win which increased the net run rate.

The victory gave GT a two-game winning streak and bolstered their claim for a playoff spot.

“How many captains are confident?” Ashwin on Shubman Gill

Ashwin referred to Gill’s decision to persist with Kagiso Rabada. In his first over, Virat Kohli hit Rabada for five fours. Finally, the over produced 21 runs.

Gill decided to give the Proteas another spin, resulting in the wicket of Virat Kohli. Kohli’s wicket finally started RCB’s slide.

“How many captains have this ability? How many captains have the confidence to give their bowler another over after conceding five fours in the first over? Maybe he argued with the doorman and executed the plans. Sometimes you fall behind on plans, but the hitter is good enough to overcome it. He read the game well and continued with Rabada and Siraj for six overs. They got Virat Kohli’s wicket there and the game changed from then on,” Ashwin said.

‘It was a masterclass’ – Ashwin on Gill’s batting aggression

When the chase began, Shubman Gill started very aggressively. He took 24 runs off Josh Hazlewood’s first over and eventually made 43 runs in 18 balls.

Although Gill fell to Bhuvneshwar Kumar later on, he had done enough to take GT to the finish line.

Ashwin hailed this counter-attack as a tactical masterclass.

“I know he didn’t score big runs, but he showed intent against Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who has probably been the bowler of the tournament so far. He made space and hit Josh Hazlewood on the off side, then came in and went towards the leg side. Just tactical brilliance, it was a masterclass. There was a four on the inside edge against Bhuvneshwar, but apart from that, he looked absolutely in impeccable touch,” Ashwin said.

At the moment, Gill is the fifth best run-getter in the tournament with 373 runs in 8 matches. He is also the leading GT race scorer at the moment.

Gill has made his runs at an average of 47 and a strike rate of 155. He has also made 3 fifties with a high score of 86.

GT’s next match

Gujarat Titans will take on Punjab Kings in Ahmedabad next. The match will be played on May 3.

Both teams opened their seasons against each other and last year’s runner-up won that contest. PBKS had their unbeaten streak snapped in their last match, but GT will be optimistic after their two-game winning streak.
