Indian cricket is currently in its golden phase in white-ball cricket, especially with the amount of talent they possess in the future prospects of white-ball cricketers. Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer is undoubtedly one of the brightest names to have been ignored by the Indian T20I side over the last few years.
The Punjab Kings have had one of the most successful captains in the history of the team’s IPL legacy, in the form of Shreyas Iyer. The Indian middle-order batsman has almost reinvented the team and rediscovered his skills.
Under Iyer’s leadership, the Punjab Kings won nine of their league stage matches, while two of them ended in a draw. He then led the team in three knockout matches, winning Qualifier 2 against the Mumbai Indians, but finished second after being defeated twice by the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the playoffs.
“Is Shreyas Iyer advocating to be considered a captaincy option in white-ball cricket, mainly in T20Is?” – Zaheer Khan answers this question.
Shreyas Iyer has picked up his captaincy streak from where he left off last season. Iyer has been a truly amazing leader in PBKS, with five wins in 6 of his opening matches in IPL 2026. Under the captain, the team looked invincible by all accounts.
Iyer has also amassed over 200 runs this season and has been electric on the field for the Punjab Kings; Despite this, fans chose his captaincy as his standout characteristic during a fan poll. After these discussions, there began to be rethinking whether Iyer should be given the captaincy in India’s white-ball set-up.
Answering this question, Zaheer KhanThe former Indian pacer, responded on Cricbuzz: “I think he will be part of the T20 set-up first something he will have in mind; I’m not sure if he is thinking about captaincy right now. In due time, he may be the contender for that, if that’s what you’re asking.”

“You should think about making an impact with your performances” – Zaheer Khan
Zaheer then emphasized the fact that captaincy is a long-term goal for the veteran Indian batsman; Firstly, he should aim to secure a place in that T20 XI, which already looks well-equipped with former players still fit and several new players waiting in the queue.
“He has captained franchises for a while and has been successful in the way he has led them. Clearly, he has that kind of vision and mentality,” explained Zaheer, who considered Shreyas’ overwhelming track record as captain of three IPL franchises.
However, he continued, “When you look at the kind of players the Indian team has, I think first and foremost he should try to make an impact with individual performances just as a player to secure a place. He is very keen to make a mark with individual performances, no doubt.”
Shreyas Iyer becomes the first captain in IPL history to extend an unbeaten streak of 6 matches
Shreyas Iyer started his journey as captain in the IPL under Ricky Ponting when he was with the Delhi Capitals as a young up-and-comer. He then switched sides to the Kolkata Knight Riders, after tremendous success with the Capitals, including two playoffs and a runners-up finish in the IPL.
With the Knight Riders, Iyer led them to a title in his only full season as team captain and was then released to be bought for a whopping INR 26.75 crore. Since then he has led by example, leading from the front.
Under the captaincy of Shreyas Iyer and the coaching of Ricky Ponting, PBKS reached the final after a decade in the IPL and finished runners-up last season. However, they look even more motivated to seal the cup this season for the first time as they set an unbeaten record after the first six matches of an IPL season.
