Shreyas Iyer is a well-known name in Indian cricket. But surprisingly, in the recent past he only participated in a limited number of matches for the national team. On April 17, the Punjab Kings (PBKS) scored a resounding victory over the Mumbai Indians (MI) under Shreyas’ leadership, overshadowing a brilliant century by MI opener Quinton de Kock.
Former Australian captain Aaron Finch expressed his amazement at seeing the PBKS paceman and batsman playing only a limited number of matches for Team India. The limited number of opportunities that Shreyas Iyer received shows the sheer amount of competition and depth in the Indian cricket pack.
Aaron Finch is surprised to see Shreyas Iyer in only a few matches for Team India
During a discussion on ESPNcricinfo, Aaron Finch fixed that Shreyas Iyer’s leadership quality is incredible. But he is scary for the other teams as he doesn’t play much cricket for the Indian team.
“It’s just started as a house on fire. His leadership is incredible. It’s amazing that he doesn’t play more cricket for India. It’s terrifying for rivals and other international teams around the world. Look at the depth of Indian cricket right now,” Aaron Finch said in the discussion.

The former captain called the PBKS captain “unfortunate.”
Finch considered Iyer a bit unlucky as he received a limited number of opportunities to shine for the Men in Blue. He also explains that for a team that has just defended its T20 World Cup title convincingly, it is not easy for them to make changes to the squad.
“That’s the unfortunate thing. You have to respect the position they’re in at the moment. They’re coming off a World Cup win. It’s not as simple as saying, ‘He’s in great form, so he’s coming in. It’s just unfortunate timing for the guys who are on the second rung,'” the former cricketer explained.
For me, if I am the coach, he definitely comes in because he is one of the best players in that middle order – Piyush Chawla
For Piyush ChawlaIyer will be an automatic choice if he is the team’s selector simply because of his batting credentials as a middle-order player.
“For me, if I am the selector, he definitely comes in because he is one of the best players in that middle order, and he has that cricket brain on his shoulder and can actually lead this Indian team if you look into the future. For me, he definitely comes in,” said the former cricketer-turned-cricket pundit.
