Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill accepted that the conditions at the Narendra Modi Stadium were difficult for batsmen, despite which players like Sai Sudharsan and Washington Sundar thrived in the chase.
Shubman Gill’s team has leveled its points tally with teams like three other franchises, including Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals, who also have 12 points having played 10 matches this season.
However, they were unable to advance into the top four due to their poor net run rate; They have returned to the competition and their next matches will be crucial for both them and their opponents.
Early dismissal of Shubman Gill and Jos Buttler failed to help PBKS restrict GT
After the start of the innings, while chasing a small total of 164 runs. Shubman Gill was dismissed in the second over off the bowling of Arshdeep Singh. He remains the top scorer in 2026, with 378 runs having played nine matches in the season with a strike rate of 154.92.
With the huge ground falling early, the Kings looked to get back into the game. They then dismissed Jos Buttler and Vijaykumar Vyshak hit back after the powerplay. Butler’s ejection surely gave PBKS a chance in the game.
However, Sai Sudharsan remained a firm obstacle in their path to victory and their first successful win in the second innings with the ball. The batsman reached his third half-century for the Titans this season, once again delivering when it mattered most.
Washington Sundar guided GT to strong finish in chilling competition
Sai Sudharsan’s form has also been undeniably good in this year’s IPL; however, its form came quite late in the edition. In the last four matches, he has scored more than fifty goals on three occasions, including that huge century against the Royal Challengers at Chinnaswamy.
Washington Sundar was introduced at number five after Nishant Sindhu, playing his first game in this edition of the IPL, was sent at no. 4. Sundar held his nerve, batted hard and took the Titans home with an unbeaten 40 off just 23 balls.
In Marcus Stoinis’ final over, which did not start well for the batsman, Arshad Khan struggled with just one run off the third and fourth balls. The match seemed to be settled, three runs were needed off two balls, and Sundar finally got over the fence with a massive swing over the square leg boundary.
This is not the kind of wicket we will chase in 15-16 overs- Shubman Gill
Shubman Gill agreed that the conditions were really challenging in the context of the game; However, the way GT’s batsmen took the innings as deep as they could was impressive from a winning team’s perspective.
“I think in chases like these, we would have liked not to go that deep, but two crucial points. This is not the kind of wicket we will chase in 15-16 overs. So we thought maybe one earlier or a couple of overs earlier. That was the conversation,” the GT skipper said after the win.
“If someone is prepared, he must go deep because it is not easy to hit from ball 1. The long balls were not coming while we were playing on other wickets. It was important for the batsman to be prepared… Fortunately we had Washi, and he finished the game for us,” Shubman Gill praised Washington Sundar for hitting those last six that took the Titans home.
