The race is almost over! Ben Stokes reveals terrible injury and confirms his return

England Test captain Ben Stokes has spoken about a terrifying moment when he suffered a “pretty nasty” injury earlier this year. Ben Stokes, known for his fearless attitude, revealed that things could have gone very wrong if he hadn’t turned his head.

The journey has not been easy; Still, there is relief that things are heading in the right direction for this all-rounder star. The accident took place in February at the Durham Indoor Training Center. He was simply standing near the nets while coaching the young players during a session.

When Ben Stokes suffers a nasty facial injury

Suddenly, an 18-year-old batsman, Robbie Bowman, hit the ball hard and it went straight into Stokes’ face. The impact was very serious since the ball hit him directly and fractured his cheekbone. His right eye was badly swollen and bruised, he had cuts on his face and his nose was bleeding.

It was a terrifying moment for everyone present at the Durham indoor training center. Shortly after the incident, Stokes had to undergo facial surgery, which fortunately went well. But the recovery has taken longer than expected, with its return delayed from April for the county season to May 2026.

Ben Stokes calls it a ‘lucky’ escape after scary injury

Sharing updates on his recovery, Stokes admitted that it was a difficult phase and the situation could have been much worse, but he managed to avoid something more dangerous. That thought in itself has helped the England captain maintain a positive attitude during recovery.

Stokes said in an internal interview with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB): “Yes, I got one straight in the face. Quite unpleasant, but funnily enough it’s probably the best outcome of a bad situation, to be honest. Just a couple of centimeters one way or the other – I might not be here doing this interview if I didn’t turn my head.”

Yes, all things considered, although I did have some pretty major facial surgery to fix it. It was a bit of a mess down here. I came out very lucky. So yeah, very grateful for that.”

Ben Stokes plans county return ahead of big Test return

Now, Stokes’ main goal is to get back to full fitness. The ace all-rounder revealed he plans to play some county games for Durham before the busy international season begins.

If all goes well, Stokes is expected to return as England captain in the first home Test of the summer against New Zealand at Lord’s, starting on June 4.

Stokes signed off by saying: “And yes, obviously I delayed a whole month, five weeks, to get back to where I wanted to be to play at the start of the season for Durham.

But yeah, I had to quickly go back to the drawing board and put together a plan to prepare me to play a couple of games for Durham before the summer of trials starts. So yeah, at the end of all that now, but it was a pretty scary situation, but luckily we’re still here and everything’s fine.”
