Delhi Capitals Women (DC-W) captain Meg Lanning couldn’t control her emotions after her team lost the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024 final against the Royal Challengers Bangalore Women (RCB-W)-led by Smriti Mandhana, on Sunday. , March 17 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.

Meg Lanning & Co. had an excellent campaign in WPL 2024, as well as in the inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL). Delhi Capitals Women (DC-W) dominated and finished on top to directly qualify for the finals. DC-W started off with a loss against Mumbai Indians, but it didn’t take them long to bounce back strongly.

DC-W were absolutely brilliant with their performance in the following matches and went on a 4 match winning streak, before losing a thriller to UP Warriorz by just one run. Delhi Capitals Women quickly forgot the defeat and registered two consecutive wins to end the league stage on a high.

Delhi Capitals Women batsmen were excellent in the league stage and four of them (Meg Lanning, Shafali Verma, Jemimah Rodrigues and Alice Capsey) were in the top 10 run-getter list. Captain Meg Lanning was the best player with the bat on her side. Furthermore, Delhi Capitals Women’s bowlers were equally good as three players – Marizanne Kapp, Jess Jonassen and Radha Yadav – were in the list of top 10 wicket-takers this season.

After getting off to a good start, they faced a terrible batting collapse and were bowled out for 113. The total was too small to defend, but the DC-W bowlers gave it their all and took the game to the end. However, Ellyse Perry and Richa Ghosh remained unbeaten and helped Royal Challengers Bangalore Women win the match by 8 wickets.

During the post-match presentation ceremony, Meg Lanning expressed her disappointment at the loss in the final. She said:

“It’s obviously disappointing not to be able to do it. Finals are about playing well on the day. Congratulations to RCB – they outperformed us tonight. It all happened relatively quickly, as it usually does. As we’ve seen in this tournament, crazy things happen. “All credit to RCB, they defended very well and deserved the victory.”

Meg Lanning further said that they did a lot of things well during the season, but it was not enough to lift the trophy. The legendary cricketer also thanked the support staff for helping him throughout the competition. She stated:

“We did a lot of things well. Unfortunately it was not like that. Many people made a great effort. I want to thank the support staff. Cricket is a fun game: sometimes you win.“Take some.”
