Watch: Virat Kohli gives a fiery farewell to Gujarat Titans and Team India captain Shubman Gill during GT vs RCB clash

In the 42nd match between Gujarat Titans (GT) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Virat Kohli gave a fiery farewell to his team India captain Shubman Gill after taking a strong catch at cover region. Gill tried to make an attack towards Bhuvneshwar Kumar and failed to get the necessary lift, providing a mere catch to the former India captain.

The incident occurred during the last ball of the fifth over, when Virat Kohli hit the ball on the ground and expressed his aggressive celebration on the field. With the catch, Shubman Gill was dismissed after playing a ferocious knock of 43 runs off 18 balls, and put GT in a good position as they chased 156 runs.

Virat Kohli had a heated moment

Virat Kohli, that night, was earlier seen arguing with the fourth umpire during the first innings when RCB captain Rajat Patidar was dismissed when Jason Holder took a controversial catch, as the ball touched the ground while he completed the catch, and surrendered.

Virat and head coach Andy Flower soon approached the fourth umpire, and both seemed cheerful and chatting after the fall of the wicket. The decision is sure to be one of the most controversial moments as IPL 2026 has seen referee errors in the previous games.

Virat Kohli creates a new record

The 37-year-old played a good knock of 28 off 13 deliveries, looked in good touch, but could not convert his start into another big score. He was dismissed by Kagiso Rabada, who the RCB batsman hit five consecutive fours in the pacer’s first over.

Kohli once again etched his name in the history books. On Thursday, he became the first player in the world to score 8,000 IPL runs in India. Kohli, who is playing his 232nd IPL match, achieved the milestone by hitting Rabada for a four off the third ball of RCB’s second innings. Earlier, he became the first batsman to score 9,000 runs in the IPL.

GT defeats RCB

Coming into the match, the Titans invited RCB to bat first. They lost Jacob Bethell early but then Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal formed a partnership. However, there was a flurry of wickets in between as they lost four wickets in just 18 runs. Then some backward runs from Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Venkatesh Iyer, 15 and 12 runs respectively, helped RCB score 155/10.

Arshad Khan was the pick of the bowlers as he picked 22/3 and bowled well, with Holder and Rashid Khan picking two wickets each. While chasing, GT lost Sai Sudharsan who returned early. After Gill’s wicket, the Titans continued to lose wickets and RCB were back in the chase with the score now at 122/5. If GT loses, RCB will surely keep a hand in the playoffs.
