Afghan all-rounder Najibullah Zadran brutally mocked Australian Test and ODI captain Pat Cummins after the Rashid Khan-led team’s victory over Bangladesh in the T20 World Cup 2024. Team Afghanistan defeated Bangladesh by 8 runs in a thrilling encounter at the Arnos Vale Ground in St. Vincent on Monday, June 24 (local time). The Rashid Khan-led team became the second team after Rohit Sharma’s India to advance to the semi-finals of the tournament from Group 1 of Super 8s.

Australia began the Super Eight stage with a victory over Bangladesh. However, the team led by Mitchell Marsh suffered a shocking defeat against Afghanistan. Team Australia failed to secure victory against Team India in their last Super Eight match, suffering a 24-run defeat in Saint Lucia on Monday.

The T20 World Cup 2021 champions relied on Bangladesh to help them reach the semi-finals of the biggest tournament. Australia would have advanced to the semi-finals if Bangladesh had defeated Afghanistan in their recent match. Australia has a better net run rate (NRR) compared to that of Afghanistan.

Najib Zadran trolls Pat Cummins after Afghanistan victory

Afghanistan secured the last semi-final spot ahead of Australia in the T20 World Cup. Najib Zadran tweeted sarcastically after Australia’s failure to reach the semi-finals. Zadran highlighted Pat Cummins’ prediction on the top four teams in the ongoing 2024 T20 World Cup.

“Q: How are the top 4 semi-finalists? A: Definitely Australia, you choose the other 3,” Najib tweeted after Afghanistan’s victory.

Before the T20 World Cup began, Pat Cummins confidently predicted that Australia would qualify for the semi-finals. Cummins said Australia’s place in the top four was assured, leaving the choice of the other three teams open to speculation.

“Definitely Australia. And then you can choose which three you want,” Cummins said when asked about the other possible semi-finalists for the T20 World Cup.

Afghanistan defeated strong title contenders New Zealand in the group stage to secure a spot in the Super Eight stage. Afghan surprised Australia and remained in the race to qualify for the semi-finals. They continued their successful streak by defeating Bangladesh in a dramatic match to advance to the semi-finals.

The Rashid Khan-led team successfully defended 115 runs in a rain-restricted game. Pacer Naveen-ul-Haq and Rashid Khan took three wickets each in the must-win match. Naveen picked up two consecutive wickets to eliminate the opposing team. He was named Player of the Match for his bowling heroics.

Rashid Khan’s Afghanistan team will play South Africa in the first semi-final at the Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba, Trinidad, on Wednesday, June 26 (local time). Meanwhile, the Indian team will compete against England in the second semi-final at the Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados, on Thursday, June 27th.
