Before the T20 World Cup began, Pat Cummins confidently predicted that Australia would qualify for the semi-finals. Cummins said Australia’s place in the top four was assured, leaving the choice of the other three teams open to speculation.

“Definitely Australia. And then you can choose which three you want,” Cummins said when asked about the other possible semi-finalists for the T20 World Cup.

Afghanistan defeated strong title contenders New Zealand in the group stage to secure a spot in the Super Eight stage. Afghan surprised Australia and remained in the race to qualify for the semi-finals. They continued their successful streak by defeating Bangladesh in a dramatic match to advance to the semi-finals.

The Rashid Khan-led team successfully defended 115 runs in a rain-restricted game. Pacer Naveen-ul-Haq and Rashid Khan took three wickets each in the must-win match. Naveen picked up two consecutive wickets to eliminate the opposing team. He was named Player of the Match for his bowling heroics.

Rashid Khan’s Afghanistan team will play South Africa in the first semi-final at the Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba, Trinidad, on Wednesday, June 26 (local time).
