Ashes 2023: “Definitely Challenging” – Todd Murphy On Bowling To Ben Stokes

22-year-old Australian spinner Todd Murphy has spoken about his experience bowling with Ben Stokes. He said that bowling the England captain is a challenge because he tries to hit every bowl as much as possible.

Victoria spinner Todd Murphy replaced veteran Nathan Lyon in the Australian XI for the third test. Notably, Lyon was ruled out of the entire series due to a calf injury.

Meanwhile, the young spinner was punished by Stokes while smoking the bowler for 5 sixes. However, Murphy had the last laugh when he dismissed Stokes for 80 on the third ball of the 53rd.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Todd Murphy opened up about his bowling experience with Stokes. He elaborated:

“These are situations that any cricketer wants to be involved in. [Pat Cummins and I] I had a chat at lunch and he said they would start the rapids, but soon after I got into the game.

“Pitching to Ben in that frame of mind was definitely a challenge. You knew what to expect – he was trying to hit every ball for six, so it was a challenge.”

It was nice to get his wicket at the end: Todd Murphy over Ben Stokes

Todd Murphy said that if he had completed the catch and throw trick, things would have been different. However, the spinner was delighted to pick Stokes’ wicket.

“I also probably cost myself there with the dropped catch, so things could have been different. He got a couple, but it was nice to get [his wicket] in the end.

“The older guys have always been very good at giving me ideas, but without trying to throw me too much and let me do my thing. It was just about trying to mix it up, get it out of the groove of him and get it out of his swing arc.”

Todd Murphy added that he was disappointed to see Moeen Ali pick wickets on Day 2, but was happy to learn that spin plays a big part in the match.

“As a spinner, as the game progresses, your role is going to change. was to see a little offer yesterday [but] disappointing to see him get wickets from our point of view. It’s good to know that spin can play a role in this,” he said.

Murphy also spoke about the advice he received from Pat Cummins in a video posted by cricket.com.au ahead of Day 3.

“It was just about being brave and Patty (Cummins) was just reiterating that ‘Keep supporting yourself mate, you’ll create an opportunity for us,'” he said.
