Ashes 2023: Graeme Swann Sensationally Claims Australia’s Dismissal Of Jonny Bairstow Breached Spirit Of Cricket

Former England cricket team Spinner Graeme Swann has been left furious after the controversial sacking of English batsman Jonny Bairstow during the second Ashes Test 2023 at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground in London.

Jonny Bairstow was stumped by goalkeeper Alex Carey during the last day of the second test match. Many felt that the sacking was against the spirit of cricket and that the Pat Cummins-led side should have withdrawn their appeal.

Notably, Jonny Bairstow dodged a Cameron Green bouncer on the last ball of 52 and walked out of his box thinking the umpires had called the over. However, the ball was not yet dead and Alex Carey quickly picked up the ball and lobbed it back to the forward end where he hit the stumps. Jonny Bairstow was offside and was declared out by the third umpire.

“If you think what happened yesterday was in the spirit of cricket then you are not invited to my birthday party and I will stop your pocket money”, Graeme Swann.

I think there was absolutely nothing wrong with that: Graeme Swann’s former teammate Andrew Strauss.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Graeme Swann’s former teammate Andrew Strauss said it could be argued that the sacking was against the spirit of cricket, but according to him there was nothing wrong with it.

“Australia are the villains, as far as England fans are concerned, especially Cummins and his decision not to withdraw Bairstow’s appeal. Cummins will get a lot of stick for the rest of the series, I would have thought, thanks to that,” Cummins said.

“You could argue that it went against the spirit of cricket. In truth, I think there was absolutely nothing wrong with that, but of course the crowd will see it through patriotic English eyes. Bairstow was sleepy coming out of the fold of him. I felt pretty comfortable with what Australia did.”

Meanwhile, Australia won the first game at Edgbaston and then won the second match at Lord’s Cricket Ground to take a 2–0 series lead. England put up an amazing effort in the second Test and played like champions but ended up on the losing side.
