Jasprit Bumrah has been grabbing public attention ever since he led India to victory against Pakistan. He bowled a spell of 3/14 picking up key wickets to deliver the knockout blow to Pakistan in New York on Sunday.
Pakistan’s bowlers defeated India for just 119. That was India’s lowest total in T20 World Cup cricket. So, the onus fell on the Indian bowlers to step up and defend the target, and they achieved it in unison.
Bumrah started the slide with the first wicket of Babar Azam. Mohammad Rizwan’s wicket in Pakistan’s 15th innings turned the match in India’s favour. There was a 36-ball spell in Pakistan’s innings when they failed to hit a single boundary.
The pressure increased on the batsmen and they succumbed to it. Arshdeep Singh defended 18 overs and India won the match by six runs. The victory has taken India to the top of the points table with two matches remaining. They play the United States on June 12 and Canada on June 15.

Meanwhile, former Indian batsman Sanjay Manjrekar has given full credit to Bumrah for changing India’s fortunes in the match. In his recent tweet, he said that Jasprit Bumrah is the best Indian player right now and the Indian media is focusing on players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.
“While the Indian media obsesses over Virat & Co, Jasprit Bumrah is quietly winning matches for India single-handedly. By far the best player in the Indian team and has been for a while now. #JaspritBumrah#ICCT20WC,” Manjrekar wrote in his tweet.
The Indian team was tested to the core with both bat and ball in this match. It was Rishah Pant who fought hard and scored 42 crucial runs with the bat, taking India to that score of 119.
Bumrah then led the attack and responded with the bat as India needed early wickets and he provided them. First, he sacked Babar Azam and then came back to sack Rizwan and Iftikhar Ahmed to take the gas out of the chase.
Bumrah and Hardik Pandya took two wickets each and made the most of the conditions. The inswinger he bowled to dismiss Rizwan was one of the best deliveries of the match. Meanwhile, Pandya took advantage of short speeches to good effect.
The Indian pacer missed the last T20 World Cup due to back problems and has made a good start in India’s quest to win this T20 World Cup. Jasprit Bumrah took 20 wickets in the ODI World Cup and 20 wickets in IPL 2024 and looks in excellent form.
Pakistan now depends on other results besides their own matches being must-win competitions. They need to win both their matches by large margins and hope that India beats the United States and Canada. They will also hope that the United States defeats Ireland to have a chance to beat them in their final league match. Two wins for Pakistan will take them to four points and level on points with the United States. The NRR will then enter the picture and only one of those two teams will make it to the Super 8s.
