As per the latest comments from Mumbai Indians bowling coach Paras Mhambrey, the franchise is more concerned about Bumrah’s fitness than his wicket tally as he believes the legendary pacer will get wickets once his hard work pays off.
The Mumbai Indians made it to the playoffs last season but have also failed to maintain a promising run this season. They are in tenth position after five games and have shown no signs of recovery. They have already lost four of the last five games this season.
One of the main reasons for this failure is their weakened bowling attack. Although they only added the likes of Allah Ghazanfar and Shardul Thakur to last season’s lineup, the players were thrashed as they all had an economy rate of over 12 in this edition. Even the great Jasprit Bumrah has become ineffective.
MI bowling coach backs Jasprit Bumrah despite his wicketless spell
Mumbai Indians fans are not used to seeing Jasprit Bumrah wicketless for so long in any edition of the IPL. The ace pacer has been a lethal threat in the MI attack, but this year, the batsmen have effectively reduced his impact. This has been a batsman’s season so far in the IPL, but Bumrah’s class transcends statistics or figures.
After five games in the competition, Jasprit Bumrah has bowled 19 overs and has no wickets in this edition of the IPL. This has been a concern for Mumbai Indians as their most lethal weapon with the ball is no longer a threat.
However, this happened with Bumrah as the players often adapted to a cautious approach against the Indian legend as they did not sense any threat from the other end. MI’s other players including Trent Boult, Deepak Chahar and Shardul Thakur have given away runs at an economy of more than 12 runs per over in almost every game.
Despite this, MI bowling coach Para Mhambrey has backed the veteran pacer and shown faith in his ball skills, idealizing him as a big match-winner.
‘I don’t have any doubt about him’, Mumbai Indians coach trusts Bumrah to change MI’s destiny in IPL 2026
Mhambrey did not consider Bumrah’s number of wicketless wickets to be a concern as he explained that he has a very different role to play for the team and wickets do not always define performance.
“I don’t think it is a challenging situation. Booms is a fighter. He is fighting to get ahead. Not everything can be related to just wickets. He bowls at different stages of the game. Many times, he plays different roles for us, in terms of finishing the PowerPlay,” he explained.
The legendary pacer has been injury prone on the other side, missing matches for MI on several occasions, and Mhambrey’s biggest concern is that Bumrah gives his 100% in every match, in terms of fitness and performance.
“For me, the most important thing is how he comes to training in each session. In the nets, he came in with the same intensity, he did what was expected of him. I have no doubt about him. I am sure that others in the team too, the captain, the coach and the entire management, have no doubts in terms of his performance… All that effort will translate into wickets in future matches,” he added.
MI take on Gujarat Titans in rivalry week
Mumbai Indians, who have already lost four games in a row, need to bounce back in the competition and to do so, they will have to excel in the rivalry week. Under captain Hardik Pandya, they take on their former franchise, the Gujarat Titans, in Ahmedabad.
They have two important matches in the rivalry week against the Gujarat Titans and the Chennai Super Kings. While the Titans eliminated MI from the IPL 2023 playoffs, Mumbai Indians avenged their defeat in the 2025 playoffs by eliminating the Titans.
Ahead of the big match, MI would try to get a 100% fit team, with Rohit Sharma returning to the top and Will Jacks also back with the team. However, both things are yet to be confirmed as Rohit is being closely monitored and Jacks is yet to join the Mumbai Indians camp.
