Cricket South Africa (CSA) added new regulations for the second edition of South Africa’s premier T20 League (SA20) competition to maintain high standards. The salary cap was increased by R5.1 million (approximately USD 276,000) to R39.1 million (approximately USD 2.1 million) from the first year.
The salary cap increase will allow the team to select quality players for the tournament. The size of the squad has also increased to 19, with the addition of a rookie player. Teams will need to acquire a rookie South African player who is 22 years of age or younger and has not appeared in the SA20 before.

The official trade window for South African players opened on June 1, allowing teams to pre-sign, trade, purchase or retain their players ahead of the auction. This increased capacity allows teams to pre-sign up to four foreign players, making it possible to sign players that were previously unavailable prior to the auction.
“The addition of a rookie player to the teams shows our continued commitment and investment to give exposure to young talent on a global platform.” he continued.
“We saw some special performances from the young players in our first season. SA20 continues to be an aspiration for up-and-coming cricketers and this is another chance for them to showcase their skills.” He concluded.
Six teams are required to have 11 South African players in their squads next season. A team can field a maximum of four foreign and seven local players in its playing XI. The inaugural edition of the SA20 season was successful and Sunrisers Eastern Cape became champions.
