Indian skipper Rohit Sharma spoke about the disappointing 209-run defeat they suffered in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia at the Oval, England. He admitted that experienced players not shooting cost them the game.

India was on the receiving end of the thrashing at the hands of Australia in the final. They were outclassed by the Pat Cummins-led side, who batted and bowled amazingly well, making the Rohit Sharma-led side look clueless throughout the 5 days of the game.

The Indian bigwigs once again failed to deliver on the big stage, potentially the main reason behind their 209-run loss. Skipper Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Cheteshwar Pujara and Ravindra Jadeja all failed to score half a century and were the main reason India suffered a collapse.

Rohit Sharma said that veteran players cannot be taught to bat as they have come into these conditions. He stressed that he does not want to be critical about it. Speaking to reporters after the ICC World Test Championship final, he said:

“Now we have played two finals. You can’t really teach them to hit in the short time you have before the game. It’s all about preparing yourself and how you can do it is completely up to you. I don’t want to be too critical about it, the reason I’m saying that is because when we were here last time (2021), a lot of the senior hitters really raised their hands and got us ahead in the series.”

Rohit Sharma admitted that great players who don’t play well cost them the game, but he doesn’t call it a lapse in concentration as everyone gave their best. He explained:

“If we play in Australia, we play in England, but yeah, like you said, this unique game, if you’re not mentally there, you can lose a game. You know, and that’s exactly what happened. We honestly wanted to do our best. Everyone prepared very well in the short time we had, that’s all you can do.

“But yeah, when you have in your top six, you know, five or six hitters who have quite a bit of experience playing in these conditions before and they couldn’t get any big runs and that’s what probably cost us the game. But I won’t call it a lapse in concentration. He concluded.
