Australian veteran Nathan Lyon revealed his wife’s reaction after he decided to bat in the second Test at Lord’s despite picking up a major calf injury. Nathan Lyon testified that his wife called him an “absolute idiot” when she shared her desire to hit in the second inning of the game.

Nathan Lyon suffered a calf injury while playing on the boundary during England’s first innings of the 2023 Test of the Ashes second series. Speaking on the Willows Talk podcast, nathan lyon he mentioned that he informed his wife in the morning that he intended to hit if necessary.

The 35-year-old claimed that the medical team and skipper Pat Cummins turned down his offer to bat. However, he received the approval of head coach Andrew McDonald.

“I went to Ron (McDonald) and said, ‘I’m hitting,’ and he said, ‘Okay, I’m thinking the same thing. So Andrew McDonald was the one who said yes, and I said ‘I need you to talk to the medical team,’ so he went to talk to the medical team. He knew the risks, he could not (injure him) worse ”, he continued.

Lyon was ruled out of the remaining series after the Lord’s Test. Todd Murphy, who impressed with his bowling in his debut series, replaced him in the third Test at Headingley in Leeds.

Lyon made the decision to jump in and hit since he was out of action for a few weeks. He stressed that he would not have taken such a risk if it had been a minor tear.

“If it was a minor tear I probably wouldn’t have gone to bat knowing we had a decent rest and may have missed the third Test and right for the fourth and fifth Tests.” he continued.

“But I knew I would be out for the next 10-12 weeks, so I took a couple of tablets, was strapped down from the knee down, couldn’t move my foot at all, limped out, stood in the long room and waited. Bat,” He concluded.
